Is it my imagination, or do those sparks have shadows...?

haha they do, but I think I excluded that object from the lightsource in the latest render

Ja mooi, hoor. Y'used a particle emitter for the sparks, yeah? ^^
Nice work. Love the chamfering on the edges. Scratch marks also came out really well, too; there, but nice and subtle.

Don't worry, you'll get there. And remember me if y'need a hand by any chance.
:$ I still don't know how to use particle emitters yet...

haha it's mostly the preset weld spark which you have at super spray, with some modifications. And motion blur at..10 or 11 frames

I've... never fiddled with any of that sorta thing before. >_<;
I guess that makes me a n00b. :$ Though it's ironic, back in the days of Neverwinter Nights, I used to write particle emitter models by hand in ASCII MDL format for the game's engine. And ended up making a really supurb looking explosion in the game that looked better than the (Crappy) ones the designers had made; all without the aide of an actual 3D program, too. >_<

what the..DUDE! max has a great partical system thingy to self program your particles...what are you waiting for! make that explosion

*shakes head* No, the game's engine had it's own implementation of particle emitters that were incompatible with Max's particle systems. So ultimately, emitters had to be modified from the pre-existing MDL files that were packaged in the game's database, written by hand (which is what I did), or created via plugin import/export scripts for Max. Overall, it was a pretty bloody unsatisfactory procedure to make one change after another, and then reboot the game all over again just to see the effects. >_<
