everyone of the mane 6 were having nightmares night after night, so they all decided to have a sleepover to try and overcome the nightmares, everyone else eventually overcame their nightmare that night, but Rarity didn't and broke down and caved into the nightmare force that was causing them all to have bad dreams and thus it possesses her out of the mane 6.

i should also mention, that it was immediate in terms of the transformation, after rarity proved to be the easier target, they stole her away to the moon and while there they convinced her to accept the nightmare force into herself.
