Description "Post-combiners: Aerial Protection Against Power Stunts"
Prints available!
I just wanted to do a fun, vehicle-centric action piece. For the subjects, I went with a bunch of characters who used to belong to combiner teams but have gotten non-combining toys in the modern era.

It's a surprisingly prevalent trend - I only drew about half of all of them. I suspect that something nasty went down behind the scenes, robbing them of their combining power and decimating their ranks. I don't know what that was, but here we see the survivors are still in action!

The main players are:
Blades ( Universe Legends version)
Darkwing ( Universe "Darkwind")
Hot Spot ( Titanium "Hot Zone")
Motormaster ( Classics "Menasor")

And the background dudes are:
Dreadwind ( Timelines version)
Silverbolt ( Universe Legends version)
Skydive ( Universe version)
Drag Strip ( Universe version)
Dead End ( Alternators version)

The cargo being transferred is... well, something really obscure, but still Transformers-related. It doesn't actually matter to the scene, but I thought it would be fun Easter egg for those who know waaaaaaayyyyyy more TF trivia than is healthy or societally acceptable.

G1, for lack of a better one. The franchise names have gotten to be a pretty jumbled mess in the modern era.

is the cargo being carried by Motor master? If it is, it kinda reminds me of Vector Sigma...but yeah.. that's my guess

MattDrawsRobots In reply to ArwingPilot114 [2010-08-22 18:45:53 +0000 UTC]

Darkwing is picking the cargo up from Motormaster's truck bed. And, yeah, it's a little Vector-Sigma-y, but I'm afraid the answer is a lot more obscure than that. I didn't even know it existed until I read about it on the Internet.

Really cool, maybe a related idea could be to show how these guys would look combined but retaining their new forms.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to TF-The-Lost-Seasons [2010-08-20 23:35:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! That thought did occur to me, but a) most of the teams are incomplete, and b) I find it more interesting to work within the limitations of the actual toys, since that spawns unexpected ideas. What happened to those teams? Why, for instance, is Motormaster actually called "Menasor," even though the other Stunticons are still around in new forms as well? Did the catastrophic event that ended the combiner-era mess him up, so he's got copies of the whole team's minds inside his head? Devastator can still be formed , but even that team is a little off-kilter, since they lost Hook and Mixmaster but gained some new guy whose bio makes him sound like an amalgam of those two. Crazy! And inspiring, I think.

Great ideas, maybe some day we could work them into a short comic story? aA mosaic on this would be cool.

At some point we were going to use some of this designs as pre-Earth forms for some of the characters (mainly the Protectobots), in our stories but ultimately decided on using the War Within designs.

It's great too actually see them in action, hope you do more on this topic in the future.

Feel free to explore any of those ideas! I'm certainly not planning on ever doing a comic or anything, and even if I was, I wouldn't feel like you were "stealing" concepts from me. If anything, I'm flattered when my thoughts can inspire other people's projects.

I haven't been a fan of the different versions of the Protectobots in any way but your art certainly does bring a different vibe to them.
Excellent job.

You sure have changed your style.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JP-V [2010-08-20 23:23:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I found the line-art-based style tedious for a couple of reasons: It caused me to spend time and effort on details I thought were ultimately unnecessary, and then the coloring stage felt exhausting because it was like "starting over" after I'd finished the meticulous lines. This painterly approach feels more natural, since I can go from broad strokes to fine detail in a larger sweep - or at whatever back-and-forth rhythm I prefer. Plus I got a MacBook that's modified to be a tablet-PC, so I can draw right on the screen - which has pretty much eliminated any need for a non-digital stage.

Technology, man. Doing this artwork was unthinkable when I was going to art school in the mid-'90s. Not to mention the Flash-animation stuff that pays my bills.

JP-V In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2010-08-21 09:30:34 +0000 UTC]

Now I can understand your interesting choice of changing your technique style. Having to admire nearly all of your Transformers line art + colouring combined certainly does come out fabulous. Then when I saw your new picture of Trailbreaker it is then I noticed you have even more potential going for you with creating different art and by using colouring techniques which I think have came out brilliantly and naturally as you say.
Yes I've heard a lot about tablets they seem to make the process for artists go quicker and save time. I don't know if 1 day I will choose to use them because basically at the moment I'm happy sticking with good ol A4 paper.
Tell me about it I can't even keep up anymore with all new things they sell but it does definitely change the way for people becoming an artist and colouring for their future.
I do however really like Flash that is a great program to become a animator which is my dream to make cartoons.
1 thing I've been really curious about and you may have received this question before but before I do ask it I'll note you instead about it.
Look forward to your next high potential art!

I'm really loving the action of this piece. You don't see a lot of (good) vehicle mode action. It's really awesome, some of those poses/positions.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JZLobo [2010-08-20 18:55:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've been aware for a long time that I overly favor robot modes in my art, which I think gives short shrift to the defining aspect of the franchise. So I figured it was time to remedy that.

As for the mysterious cargo, it's not from an entirely different continuity - it's actually from the early days of G1, but the source isn't nearly as well-known as, say, the cartoon or Marvel comics.
