Description Autodesk Maya 2008
Adobe Photoshop CS3

Functioning 3d model of a steam punk styled streetlamp designed by Rob Sandberg. The model came out great though I had to change the design around a bit to make it function properly. I only slapped simple procedural textures on it for now to give it some life as I add it to the never ending pile-o-models-to-texture. Somehow texturing always goes undone, maybe it's because I haven't had many good texturing classes. Anyway, it is what it is for now.

Steampunk Streetlamp Short Animation

Comments and critiques are always welcome!

*Updated with simple procedural textures and lighting. Rig also completed with full range of motion, lamp sway controls, lamp sway noise controls for randomized movement and light intensity and color controls.

Looks pretty good.

Can only learn so much from tutorials, a lot comes from just doing it yourself. I bet style has its affects too.

Thanks, just looked at your 3d stuff as well, great render styles! What software do you use?

Wow, looks really good! I know you were trying to figure out what the heck you were going to do to some of it, and I think it turned out great! Good job!

Thanks, yeah, I had to rework some gears in the back so it'd function but it's working now. The animation is done, it's just sitting on my girlfriend's computer so I'll have it up soon.

I am blown away! You totally nailed the depth and mass of the lamp-arm. Again, I am honored you took the time to realized my design. We make a great team!

Glad you like it. I'll have a post to a short animation of it moving up and down soon. It's actually rendering as I type this.

I like the render. Looks functional too. Is it low poly model??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maxidius In reply to hai-lua [2008-10-28 03:27:11 +0000 UTC]

It's 38,500 tris, 19,500 faces, all quads modeled to smooth. It's very functional, I modeled it for my Advanced Rigging Workshop class so I could get some practice with set driven keys and mechanical rigging/expressions. I still want to setup one more control for it, one to make the lamp have a constant subtle sway to it and to be able to increase the amount of sway whenever it is being raised or lowered according to the speed at which it is being raised or lowered.

Sounds complex, but once you grasp the concept it isn't so hard. Goodness, wish you could do like a render of your mini animation on it. That'll be awesome.

Streetlamp Animation

It's very short and not too complex, I just wanted to show it moving for now.
