Description
Finally! I started this one almost a year ago, but had to report it several times for multiple reasons. The main reason is that i was looking for the perfect model. Finally Angeldust (previously featured on "Shanghai Love Birds") ended up on this at the last minute, and she's great as always!
In a way, it's kind of a tribute to Miyazaki, who inspired me so much when i was a child. And this giant Rat would not exist without Totoro.
It was pretty fun! The giant rat is mainly made from my cat. But no animal were harmed.
No others stocks from mine were used.
Do not hesitate to folow me on facebook! www.facebook.com/giraultmaxime
Edit : I'm really glad of this DD, thank you! I'm on hollidays at the end of the world so i can't reply to everybody, but i'm so glad to see my work appreciated and fully understood by all of you. You rocks!

Wow. This is so amazing! You are an incredible artist, but I'm sure you hear that all the time. I love how realistic yet soft and fairy-tale(ish) your art is. I love the opening to nature at the top and a leaf has fallen thru to the bottom. Rats are so very intelligent so I love the orator at the top with is little paw in the air telling the story with gestures and his little curly curl tail even giving its own gesture. Everything says he is truly the 'conductor' of his book. But, my favorite is the big, big rat at the bottom... this was like my childhood rat , "Freddie" (although he didn't have a weight issue, he did eat a lot) and was so very relaxed. I could go on and on... but I won't.
Honest, I wish I could illustrate this way. Your work needs to be a whole book!! I'd love to see you illustrate the child's poem, "The Spider and the Fly"...
Thank you for sharing your work!!!
Sheryl

Oh, you are very welcome!! I just love that piece... and lots of others you do. They are inspiring. You've got me thinking about an illustrator who I fell in love with as a child. Her book (the illustrations) memorized me! I still have it here somewhere. She did a wonderful 4 part illustration of the child's poem, "The Spider and the Fly"... I'm going to pull it out and send you the pic. I think I'll post it as a journal piece for an example. I believe you will enjoy seeing it. Of course, back then there was no digital tools. I just can't remember her name right now...
Hope you are having a wonderful week!!

Being a fan of books, this is a lovely image.Β The golden tones give it the feeling of warmth and security, while the rats give it much whimsy.Β The cheese in the stack of books is a wonderful touch.Β I'm enjoying your work today!

i love that the rat on top is reading out loud and she finds it amusing and the bottom rat is ignoring him like "there he goes again, and I'm just trying to read here"

I'm diggin this, but I'm wondering how much more I'd dig it without our female character. I love the composition and color. Blending is totally right on. Great work.
