I know the feeling- I spent several years in a Spanish speaking country... officially Spanish speaking anyway. They used a LOT of slang and spoke VERY rapidly, and for the first three months I was completely lost any time someone opened their mouth!

I *love* changing expressions, but I remember being told in one of my Spanish classes that if you speak just a little Spanish to any Spanish-speaking person, they'll automatically assume you know their whole language and speak just like that in your comic (although I've found that to be true with any foreign-speaking person; heck, I wouldn't be surprised if English-speaking people made the same mistake in different countries!).

They understand I only speak a little spanish, but if I ever say a coherent socially acceptable sentence in spanish, they immediately feel the need to speak 20 miles an hour back to me
