Description I am so sick tired of seeing "drawings" like this...

A base does not make your pictures pretty automatically. If you screw your base, it will be even uglier than your normal art that you dislike. Learn at least these basic things and that will probably make your real drawings better. Seriously, stop drawing with bases hair like that and clothes that are under the skin line, because it looks like shit and everybody thinks that you suck ― which is the damn sad truth ― and you will never get appreciated.

Plus that's a lack of respect to the art community AND mostly to the people who make bases. I don't think they are happy to see their bases on which they spent hours to be screwed like this.
Oh god no...

[EDIT] I'm sorry, I made some awful typos ;A;

In sixth grade when I first started enditing and stuff, I diddn't make those mistakes, but I still wasn't the best at base using, so when I saw your tutorial I read, and now I'm looking back after becomeing pretty good in my opinion, and am so confused XD I had a problem of NOT using curves, or even pencil lining, I used polygon for everything, so it was okayish, but not realistic at all. I actually did learn from this back then though XD

I have MsPaint and make sure that when I use bases, I take as long as possible to shade and add details to clothes and the face and such xD mine are sooooo much better than that bad example

I use MS Paint and my gallery is okay. Sometimes I get my hands on free better software, but I don't use it.Paint is my current favorite because it's so easy to use when you get good at it! Just use curvy lines and you'll be fine

GIMP is a free paint program, almost at the level of Photoshop. You can download it easily on [link] and there's also [link] that you can use for free so you can't really say that you can't use better things than paint lol xD

True true. But its kinda sad, I really tried to help out my one firend who is hooked on these by giving her tips on how to doll/pixel certain things but sadly she just ignores me and says "its her style"
Actually this whole "anime base" and doll thingy was/has been a big problem in the dolling community, but finally they made a separate folder for "traced dolls"
I think using bases is fine ( but maybe that's because I've been dolling for four or five years ) But just using bases instead of getting in some drawing practice in real isn't very helpful.
I think the main reason why these traced dolls aren't as good is because its mainly people who can't draw poses themselves so they use bases instead and get hooked on them but aren't experienced enough to know how to draw certain things. Truthfully I would recommend every tracer to try a doll forum and get some CC but most of the time when I suggest that I get ignored who flamed. XD

(( Sorry for the paragraph post, just typing my thoughts. XD ))

Dolling is so different from traced bases, the base users won't switch to dolling. They aren't doing pixel art there, they are "drawing". They don't want to pixel clothes and hair on dolls, they want to draw something in less than 15 minutes that will look better than what they are drawing atm. The people who use these traced bases don't even realize that they are working with pixel art. And they aren't aiming for pixel art but for animu art, to draw like a mangaka, which will never happen if they keep with this uh... art? lol

Though I know that some people are more pixeling than drawing. They are pretty good at it too. Well, I think these people should try pixel art, maybe with a little push lol. Maybe you didn't recommend the good people lol, but well... I'm not too sure what to do with these people who draw with traced bases lol. It's kinda like a lost case. Some do draw and use bases time to time, so they are okay, but those who only use bases and aren't even good at it (aka the reason why I did this tutorial), idk what to do. They are focused on it only and don't want to try. It's the easy solution, the one that requires no effort.

They just aren't artists, that's all. They aren't willing to put a single effort, well too bad. Just suck for the rest of your life No matter what you tell them, if they can't get to do a single little effort, there's no way you can help them :/

Yeah its unfortunate, Personally I would love to help out more people but like I said most of them just ignore me, it IS a lost cause. :/

I HAVE HEARD TRUE WORDS 8D
Well, I'm agree with this. I hate bases generally because they are for lazy people who are not interest in improve their art with excuses like: "NYAAAAAA I CAN'T DRAW BAKA" or " I'M BAD AT EVERYTHING!!!!!"
And most of them are traced from an animu screenshot : <

I saw a lot of gijinkas from Super Paper Mario with bases and they doesn't look great. God! They don't have taste on choosing bases, seriously. The style and the anatomy are not the same. What the fuck.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maybesomecake In reply to DePhoenixDown [2010-10-31 16:56:48 +0000 UTC]

It's not that they don't want to improve their art, they are trying, I know a couple of these SPM base users who try to be better, but they get more comments and faves on bases than on their own pictures, or they get told that their drawings need some serious work. They don't see that much progress on their own pictures, and they just give up and take bases to become more popular. It's perfectly normal, and when you just bash them, you're not helping it. What these people need is encouragement on their own pictures and tips and help to improve.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DePhoenixDown In reply to maybesomecake [2010-11-01 21:47:23 +0000 UTC]

I know, maybe they want to improve, but most of them only want to get more faves, and no for improve as an artist. In that case, there's no way to help those people (I don't bash them for the same reason)
I tried to help them, and few of them listen to you, others just say "thats ur opinion" or "GO AWAY U FUCKIN CUNT!!!11111"

BTW sorry for my bad english, I have some problems to express ideas and my grammar is not the best : <

ah lol idk, that tut wasn't about telling people that they shouldn't use bases, it was about how to use them o3o xD anyway I thought that most bases were anime screenshots traced lol

Karmillina In reply to maybesomecake [2010-08-25 03:31:07 +0000 UTC]

You are badly misinformed if you think pixel bases are all about tracing anime pictures D: Like, terribly misinformed. Like I said, tracing is not creative at all, and it's terrible if you do it without the original artist's permission! I am one of those artists whose art was traced and it wasn't very nice, that's why I tell you doll bases are not about tracing animu.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maybesomecake In reply to Karmillina [2010-08-25 04:55:18 +0000 UTC]

oh well sorry, I kinda like don't give a shit about bases lol, pretty much prefer just telling people that they should get their own styles and stop using bases "because it's more easy" or even just copying their favorite Bleach or Naruto picture and squeeing on the fact that they reproduce exactly an anime screen shot, but can't do their own shit for good. I mean look, they could just find someone that creates their own original bases, but what will it do? They won't learn how to draw. People use bases just because it's more easy, because they are lazy asses. Don't try asking them to respect your art, because they can't even respect their own lol.

idk I'm not sure it's really important to tell them that they are contributing to people who trace bases, because they have no idea what it means. It's like if I told you to keep an oboe in a warm and not dry place, you have no idea what the hell I'm talking about lol! You have to look for tracers for that kind of argument. Bases users' key words are only "easy, fast and quality" lol. "Originality, respect, creativity, rights, permissions, credits", they have no idea what's that.

And then again, if a base user were to look at this comment, they will totally sue me because they say that they are super original and creative, but they just can't do it by their own lol

It's funny (and sad) because it's true. What can you expect though."base artists" are usually people too lazy to draw. They probably know that's not the way clothes work, they're just too lazy to care. :V

I think I get it! Many people sure like to draw bases without any "reality" in it, so I guess this is what you were basically saying here. This is great! Hopefully, people will get to know what "reality", is.

hey, it's alright if you can't shade xD as long as you make an effort, and also, it's normal if at first it's not that pretty, you need practice. Believe it or not, but at first, I suck a lot! But I continued and now, I'm not that bad at shading!

omg. THANK. YEW.

i cant tell you how many times ive seen bases used like this where theres just changes of color, and the hair and clothes and even accesories are just plastered to the skin and with no shading or depth at all. i feel bad for base-makers. in the same way i feel bad for the coloring book creators who get their drawings messed up by little 4-year olds.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maybesomecake In reply to catcat49 [2010-05-10 01:20:27 +0000 UTC]

no, coloring books are made for 4 years olds, though some... but still, people usually associate colouring books with kiddos, so that's normal.

And it's okay if there's no shading, I mean... you can still do good without shading. If you don't know how to shade... yeah you should try but shading or not, just please don't do bangs starting from the top of the head and clothes that are insinde the skin lines. Some people don't even bother colouring the skin lines D:

catcat49 In reply to maybesomecake [2010-05-10 01:42:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah i know, but i still cant help but feel bad for the people who draw all the nice pictures to have it made so that a random poorly drawn monster is eating their head (lol i usd to do that all the time)

and yeah i see what you mean... just overall base-users shold put more effort into it and make the hair have volume and the clothes starting on the OUTSIDE. and yes, people not coloring skin lines is annoying.
*ending rant*

sonicluver101 [2010-05-10 01:03:59 +0000 UTC]

This is so truthful :U

I think sometimes people do skin-tight clothes because they dont have the ability to actually...well draw clothes yet >>"
But that doesnt give them the excuse not to try harder. Looking at other people's work can help with inspiration.
I guess people can just be lazy. Not a surprise. <:I'
Again, it may just be lack of skill, but thats what inspiration and practice is for. Even asking for critque or help.

Either way, you're right. I guess some base-using-people need to try harder and not mutilate bases like they do.
Good tutorial though. you saved a couple hundred bases from artists who are to lazy to try and fix up a picture!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

maybesomecake In reply to sonicluver101 [2010-05-10 01:26:09 +0000 UTC]

They don't use bases because they are lazy, it's because "they can't draw" and uses poses that are already made up. The only thing you have to do with bases, for them, is to add hair and clothes.
Then again it depends on the bases lol, somes have already hair or clothes... <.<"

It's because these people have no self-confidence and use bases thinking that they'll get popular easier and that people will love their art better. But that is not true... especially if they don't know how to use them.

Though some people are actually really good with bases and it's almost like pixel art. It's well done and it looks good. So I'm not blaming bases, but beginners shouldn't use bases as a trick. It's not helping them at all.
Though what can I do for that? If they want to use bases, then fine for them. Just... don't expect people to like your shit lol!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sonicluver101 In reply to maybesomecake [2010-05-10 01:59:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, nono, i meant they're to lazy to fix it all up, like you did in the tutorial.
Sometimes people do it out of laziness. i know a few who have admitted to to <:I'
But yea, people who claim they 'cant draw'...that angers me..

Exactly.

Couldnt have said it any better. Bases dont make a popular artist...Sometimes thats hard for people to come to gripes with.
But eh, what can ya do?
Besides post this tutorial that is full of win? C:
