As requested. Now i will go back to animating.

Anatomy shoulder area tutorial, dos and don'ts.

Edit: added different kinds of common stiffness.

Edit 2: this tutorial only serves your conceptual purpose, showing you what is the correct base to use for construction.

How to use this tutorial: Start by applying the base shown in the tutorial, keep the moveable parts of the shoulders in mind when you practice.

What this tutorial will not do:
- It doesn't help you with proportional/perspective problems comes with using the construction.

-it won't improve your skill unless you go and find more references and practice.

See: for general anatomy references and tutorials.

This is for concept only.

for further reference, you should go either spend the money on anatomy books and stuff, or go to websites and fine pics for study.

Nice tutorial. I just started drawing shoulder the way you do about a month ago. Glad to know I'm doing it right, now. XD

O_o the way I do it? lol~

I sometimes fall into stiff shoulders too i am trying to decrease those ratio. XD

lol, I don't know if it's the exact same way you do it, but I draw the shoulders as circles. I like drawing torsos, first, though. XD

mayshing In reply to Nikki0417 [2009-08-13 23:56:38 +0000 UTC]

torso is a good place to start, some even recommend it to be the only place to start.

IceCoffin In reply to ??? [2009-08-13 21:44:06 +0000 UTC]

Hoo boy. I don't draw stiff shoulder, but ugh. The scapulas.

I should pay more attention to their movement, I totally forget them until both arms are supposed to be stretching up. When really, I should always remember them...! Thanks for the great tutorial.

The only time I EVER draw stiff shoulders is when men are wearing stiff suits with shoulder pads! ^__^;;

actually i forgot to mention the other kind of stiff shoulders.... paper doll shoulders.

MaciaPaladin In reply to mayshing [2009-08-14 00:48:54 +0000 UTC]

I could have been volunteering my own.

Although, I draw my underdrawings with a ball for the shoulder joint, so maybe I'm not on the list of people who need help here. I always need help for OTHER reasons, though. *laughs hard*

Thanks for doing it, regardless. You're right: it's more informative this way and...

kalkie In reply to ??? [2009-08-13 19:45:07 +0000 UTC]

Wow. I was pretty aware of some aspects of the shoulder + the scapula, but I didn't know that the shoulder also rotates when the arm does. *v* I'm very happy and thankful you did this quick little note about shoulders.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayshing In reply to kalkie [2009-08-13 20:14:17 +0000 UTC]

The joint is a ball shape, of course it rotates, just not that much, and it's not apparent, at most you see the muscle moves a bit, but it does rotate, conceptually speaking, (someone can say i am wrong though), but in animation if you don't put that concept down, you will immediately notice it's like a robot turning shoulders instead of a human. So my point proven. It rotates.

I can say one thing about this tutorial, it made me really conscious about shoulders in other people's drawings as well as my own.

you are excellent at your drawing craft, the thing i would mention is... do more color studies and more painting studies, that seems to be your weaker area. Other than that, put more variety of finished stuff on DA, not everyone is into puppies. lol~ I like your street layouts for examples.
