Description
A photo I took during a photoghraph class I attended in the last trimester of my first year at the IUAV design and arts faculty. It's not among the first photos I did, but it seems a good introduction to the selection that I'm posting in this gallery. It synthesizes that work well enough.I titled my project Albero e Cartello, Tree and Sign, and centered it in the relation between natural and artificial elements. The assignment was to take photos in industrial areas and similar places. They were suitable for my idea, as they are liminal zones outside the urban areas. Their borders are often indistinct, constantly expanding and retroceding. Their space is shared with cultivated fields and wild flora. Assorted weeds. Spontaneous green spots that tend to grow and infiltrate everywhere they can, reappropriating their living space or giving it back when man returns to eradicate them.
The class was very interesting and fun. It was the first in which I really overtook my initial disorientation and finally felt relatively at ease, obtaining my first satisfying result in a practical workshop at university. From that moment onwards I kept improving my works and my understanding of the artistic languages that were demonstrated in that eclectic degree.
I owe a certain extent of my taste and of my style in photographic composition to that class, thanks to the teacher who is a pretty famous professional, an artist of the medium. Obviously I'm nowhere near either of the two: I lack most of the the technical basis of exposure and I never had a serious camera. But those months were more about stimulating our sensibilities, and proved themselves very effective to that end.
My only remorse is that of having lost the photos that were considered my best by the teacher (and his assistants), the ones that were most responsible for my grade. I'd like to try making some form of remake one day, or at least an homage to them.
