Cuttlefish or cuttles are cephalopods, just like the octopus, the squid, and the nautilus. Just like them, cuttles are among the most intelligent invertebrates, probably related to their large brain-to-body ratio.

These molluscs have an internal shell (cuttlebone) used for buoyancy. They eat other molluscs, crustaceans, and fish. They're incredible at camouflage because of their ability to quickly change colors and textures.

The genre Sepia comes from the use the ancient Greeks gave to their ink. It was an important die of reddish brown color which has since then be replaced by artificial pigments. This eliminates the need to kill the cuttles in order to extract and dry the ink sac.
