Description So this is an example of some of the roughs I'll do in Maya before painting over. The best way to describe how this mesh is built is 'Messy'. Its goal is to act as a reference point for me to draw over, or better understand the perspective.

The best way to think about the process is basically like building with Lego bricks, except you're making all the peices from scratch. Since im more focused on the overal shape vs how the mesh is built, im really sketching it out in 3D.

Creating a concept in 3D, even rough, can help different members on a team fully understand your idea, even if you're not there to explain it.

*I wouldn't render this out as a final model.

Nice! I do the same thing for human drawings, but with a program called "Posable!" Unfortunately, I don't quite know how to properly operate any 3D rendering software for ship and structure concepts... But Soon!! Great Work, love it all!

this is awesome technique, i would never think of using 3D programs as sample for drawings ( thats why my works suck XD)
may i ask... how long does it take you to create full drawing you put here, from nothing?

nice! do you do any thumbnail sketches before hand so you have somewhat of an idea how you'll be blocking it out in 3d?

Actually for this process the 3D is the actual sketch, though I'll keep a piece of paper handy just in case i need to figure something out real quick, I've only been doing 3D roughs as the first step.
