Updating my take slightly, lore is that after an Aftertale pacifist run, Gaster isn't happy with Geno's escape, coming back and controlling Frisk to make them reset, due to Geno being around and Gaster being in control, the reset didn't work properly, in the end Geno and Sans fight Frisk controlled Gaster, Geno sacrifices himself to the void to take him down and happily ever after for everyone but Geno.
