Description
CHARACTER DESIGN INFLUENCES:Sailor Moon: When I was 8, I bought a folder with Sailor Moon on it. I didn't know what the show was, but I was immediately inspired to draw it. After watching the show, collecting the manga and following Naoko Takeuchi's career, I can definitely say that SM heavily influenced me into art. It may not be an essential part of my style, and I may have never gotten into any other anime, but without SM, I don't know if I would have discovered what I wanted to do.
Hyung Tae Kim (dash seems to move around depending on where you reference him): And the whole War of Genesis series. Also heavily researched when I was a kid. I loved his style and sense of dynamic proportions.
Stephen Silver, Batman, Andy Suriano and Disney: All influenced my mascot/character design style.
PERSONAL INFLUENCES
(Vertical)
My husband: Married two years September 20th, Aaron is my high school sweetheart. Dating since we were 15 I'm sure has been quite a challenge for him. I'm stubborn, frustrating and a stress ball. But somehow, he always knows how to calm me down and make me smile. I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am today without him.
My best friend: When we met, we were just kids. I looked up to her amazing artistic ability and aspired to "draw just like Charli" someday. We would spend many sleep overs drawing and chatting, aspiring to go to SCAD and live together in dorms. Though that never happened, she guided me right to where I needed to be. And even though she lives some 500 miles away from me, she's still pushing me along and influencing me today.
My coworkers: As the supervisor of a caricaturing team, I love my coworkers. They're always so innovative and inspiring, and it's so amazing to watch them grow. They're my biggest influence hands down - they keep me on my toes. I love them all.
(Bottom) My employer: I've worked for Kaman's Art Shoppes for (dear lord) seven years. I would have never thought art could be a career without them. They opened up a whole new world to me, a fifteen year old who thought she wanted to be a translator. When I auditioned with nine other artists for the job, many much older, I was surprised to get the job. I throw my heart and soul into my work and view Kaman's as a career.
COMIC INFLUENCES
(Vertical)
PVP, Commissioned Comic and Sinfest: Running a webcomic, I have to keep up with the latest trends in comicking. PVP and Sinfest most influence my personal comic style, while I draw my borders and wording from Obsidian over at Commissioned Comic. I've been fortunate enough to actually chat with O and to have him drop in on a number of my livestreams. He really drove me to create my comic [link] Marker Slave, along with of course my coworkers and my boss Mike. Marker Slave wouldn't exist without them.
CARICATURE INFLUENCES:
(vertical)
Sean Gardner, Mort Drucker and Joe Bluhm: While the extreme exaggerations simply don't pass in the midwest park where I work, I still admire these guys for their amazing caricature abilities. My style tends to be a very toned-down mix of these.
DEVIANTART INFLUENCES:
(vertical)
and
I followed Aurore Blackcat when I was pretty young, and Vyrl and Loish as a teen. Their styles are simply fantastic and heavily influence my pinup work.
