Description This is my LARP longsword based on my personal design. The handle is turned in maple. The guard, blade, and pommel are latexed rubber. The core is fiberglass rod of 3/8 of an inch. It is quite sturdy as I have struck anotehr LARP blade full force without any damage to the blade.

You're welcome. As for the sword, it`s now showing signs of tear. The tip needs some repairs as I am starting to feel the tip of the fiberglass rod through the foam and latex.
I consider that it`s made pretty strong since it's three years old. I'm fairly satisfied with my work.

3 years of serious use. Not bad at all. A lot of larp swords have a layer of kevlar at the tip. Not sure where to get kevlar.

I have a leather tip to prevent such a mishap. I will see how it actually faired once I repair it.

Thanks. Could you also discribe how to make it? I want to make something like this one myself.

Yes I can.
The blade is made of a fiberglass rod 3/8" (10 mm) with one layer of closed cell foam (Évazote 50 Kg/m3) on each side of the rod plus one layer on top and bottom of that layer of foam. The blade is then covered with 8 coats of latex with 2 coats of latex varnish. The latex and varnish were bought at www.ateliers-nemesis.com.
Teh guard and the pommel are made is the same way as the blade. The handle is turned maple as I am a woodturner as well.
A good tutorial is here even though the frames are really bad the content is great. [link]
I may take some time to answer but I am open to more questions.

Latexed rubber? We make swords and daggers of textolite and steel. But I think to try your method...
By the way, how much does it weight?

Sorry not to have answered you yet but I never weighted the sword and I keep forgetting. I'll get to it eventually.

Your story in the comment above is fascinating - I've always been interested in working with latex on a large scale (I love masks, but I also like prosthetics) and that has got to be one of the more interesting uses of the rubber I've ever seen. I didn't ever think to apply it to such a rugged purpose. The design is pleasant, simple and elegant, realistic and not at all unwieldy as many I've seen are, and the shaping is shockingly smooth for foam. Great work, especially as it's proven so tough!

As for how you designed it - brown paper is a marvellous thing, whether cardboard or grocery bags, as it tends to come in large sizes and it's sturdy. Hopefully I'll be posting something in the near future that exhibits how I used the latter....

Nice one, how much did it cost you?

It cost me the material and the time to make it. I did it myself. I drew the design full size on a piece of cardboard. Cut it out in foam from Ateliers Nemesis (www.ateliers-nemesis.com). My latex and varnish also come from the same place. It's more expensive than standard foam and latex but it was well worth it. This blade has seen 3 full-weekend LARP events and the last one was in October and it was pouring rain. It didn't see much action at that last event but it was there.
