Description I've been in a painting rut the last week, sketching like crazy but nothing caught my fancy to paint. Finally I broke out of it thanks to two supportive people!

It's Entirely done in Corel Painter X with a Bamboo Fun.
Time: about 5 hours.

I used this photo as a reference [link] absolutely beautiful girl!
I very recently discovered a "new" (to me) artist on here called Cali Rezo [link] and this drawing is very inspired by her paintings. She is absolutely brilliant!

EDIT: I decided to do a rework of this drawing based on the really good critique I got. [link]

I like the composition and the colors. I think that the eyes are a little too big. But the details in them are nice.

Thank you!

The drawing is inspired by the French Digital painter Cali Rezo, known for painting big eyes. ^_^

I tried to make it a little "looser" and more traditional looking.
I can't take credit for the anatomy since I used reference, ^_^
If I look at something, I can paint it but doing it from imagination isn't as easy. I've been sketching a ton lately, so I'm getting a lot better at facial anatomy, but when I try to draw bodies without reference they look wrong. >_<

Practice, practice, practice I guess.

I definitely know what you mean about looser looking! I love that soft airy look some artists manage to create in portraits...but just can't seem to work it out for myself.

Using reference is the best way to get better at anything in my oppinion, It's what I've always done if I need to work on drawing something.

But it's a good thing to have something to strive for, and I definitely needed some new input to start on the next step. Experimenting, and letting myself "fail" is always something that bring me forward. I just seem to forget it between each time. >_<

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to achieve any look you want to, you have the right attitude.

...Do you mean work on this this picture to make it softer?
Well you've got the basics down! You'll get there in no time!

Not exactly softer, I don't know...

I am definitely going to fix the flaws Chaotic-AlterEgo helped making me see, but right now I have other more pressing projects that need attention.

Oh yes please! That would be fantastic! I've been longing for some good substance critique to help me progress! Every little thing gets logged in my "how to improve" brain folder.

Don't hesitate to be completely honest, I'm not one of those people who say "give me a critique", and means "please stroke my ego!". I honestly want to improve.

Activated the critique option.

Ros-Kovac In reply to meMilly [2010-02-25 10:15:17 +0000 UTC]

Okay

I'm not using the critique feature, but here I go anyway.

I see some main problems here, first, the face, her right cheekbone is too big compared to the other part, it creates certain unbalance in the whole face, I recommend you using more guidelines when you're sketching to avoid that, something that could help too is studying the reference, understanding the anatomy of the referenced image is crucial and makes you less reference-dependent, it's tough, I'm still doing that, practicing more traditional and drawing from real life helps a lot.

The other issue, lighting and shadows, they feel kinda incomplete and makes parts of the face look flat. According to your light source, I'd say it lacks of shadows on her eyes, neck and the face right side. And light on the cheekbones, nose and hair.

You could try to work more on her hair too, add more detail, play with the forms, hair tends to be messy even when it's straight. And finally, I'm not sure if it's the canvas or a textured brush but it look pretty rough in some parts, especially those orange lines around her, which would look good as part of the lighting but they're to bold and noisy.

That is, overall, what I can see, I think you used good colors, it feels lively, maybe just fixing those things I mentioned, it would look awesome.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. A lot of what you said are things I was thinking about myself as well, but wasn't completely sure about. I'm often quite hopeless when trying to critique my own work.

This is my first try with using digital chalk in Painter, that's the roughness you were pointing out, and even though I like the loose, more "traditional" feeling I agree with you it is too rough and looks unfinished. I was probably so happy about getting something done again I didn't finish. >_<

I'm happy you liked the colours, they are sort of new to me. Lately I've been looking at a lot of the good artist on here and been thinking "I love his/her painting style, but why does everybody seem to use so much grey tones and desaturated colours?". I am starting to look at colours differently, it's as if they are starting to try to tell me something. I can't really explain, but when I was younger I was always drawn to cool colours and thought anything with neon blues and purples was amazing but I'm finding that I'm more and more drawn to warm colours now. I guess I'm trying to warm up my palette but still trying to balance it out with a dash of cool.

I'm definitely going to revamp this using your advice. I feel like this has potential that hasn't been nurtured. Poor thing. ^_^

Again, thank you for taking the time.

My pleasure, it took me a while to reply with my critique exactly because I wanted to make it as detailed as possible. I know what you mean, it's hard sometimes trying to see the flaws in our works, it's always helpful getting someone else to point them out.

It's really cool you feel like that with colors, experiment with your palette, don't be shy! it's fun to do too, you can do it instinctively but it's always good re-checking color theory, I do it once in a while to keep refreshing the knowledge

meMilly In reply to Ros-Kovac [2010-02-25 19:56:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I should read up on colour theory. I remember is school I thought it was really difficult, it might be good to try and understand it again in a more "adult" brain. Hehe.

Ros-Kovac In reply to meMilly [2010-02-25 20:08:07 +0000 UTC]

I could recommend you some bibliographies if you want to. I did an investigation about theory of color for school, I got it somewhere.

Yes please, that would be great. I'm reading about anatomy at the moment too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ros-Kovac In reply to meMilly [2010-02-26 08:28:52 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you already read them: Kandinsky's Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Goethe's theory of colours were my main references when I did the investigation, there are many others but I can't recall the names

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meMilly In reply to Ros-Kovac [2010-02-26 09:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Nope, not read them. I'm pretty clueless about colour theory.
I did some in school, but I honestly think it went in one ear and out the other... >_<

Thanks.

Yay no more artist block! Great job on this too. The skin tones are marvelous. I know you must have used a large color palette to get this great of an effect but you blended it together so wonderfully. I must say my favorite things are the slight highlights of light you did around her and also the detailing of her eyes. All the little light specks give it that added something in her eyes. Fabulous

Thank you! You are just too kind!

Yes, it is very inspired by cali Rezo, and thereby influenced by Gustav Klimt as well.
