Hecate Thompson was raised in an average home, where she would get grounded for experimenting with fire magic in the living room, her moms were nice enough people - although they had to work lng hours into the night - so when it came to learning about her magic it was up to Hecate to get to the basics.
She would spend most of her days out in her parent's back garden, talking to the plants while reading her dogeared volume of "Nightshade's magic guide for Newbies."
She only new a bit of the basics from the book, which made cleaning her room easier for sure, but she wanted more.

She would talk to the plants in her parents garden, starting to grow further and further away from interacting with people, she was quiet around them, almost untrusting of them all.

But her yearning for learning was still too great and she convinced her mothers to send her to a school where she could perform more usefuly magic other than how to light her finger like a match.
