Description

I had an image of this in my mind for a long time, probably inspired by a bold painting by Chris Achilleos from almost half a century ago... I did some sketches that rested in a drawer for years. Only when I realised that I wanted the scenery of the majestic Externsteine as a background for the character things became more definite and the concept emerged out of the drawer again.

This started as a depiction of Nienor, the sister of Turin from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Children of Hurin", but from sketching it developed into a more generic Pagan priestess of a more or less Valkyrie type. I worked on it for the best part of a year in the spare time between some craft projects, using a lot of sources of mine, among it a ceremonial Iron Age drinking horn I crafted myself.
