............. for some reason i can't help but think that they did not have to listen to the changling there. twilight could levitate a bear the size of an elephant, and rarity is so skilled that she can telekinetically put in motions dozens and dozens of objects of variuos sizes and shapes with percision. twilights magic, this is no pun, horse power could easily allow her to pull that dagger out of his grip, and rarity could easily pull the filly to safety......... earlier in the comic you showed she was able to suddenly send a boulder flying at an assailant without him noticing until it was too late. what was to prevent her from doing that here? i am almsot certain if rarity was incompacitated or hurt twilight would be unwilling to risk it................

actually now that i think about it how could it be that the lizard guy could take a boulder and get up and the likes of applejack could be beaten into submission with comparitively less damage done? ..........specially when big mac can seismic toss giant cannibal mutants.

Metal-Kitty In reply to Lordoffantasy [2013-10-24 06:21:33 +0000 UTC]

Sure, she could try to do something.

While the badguy is both physically holding the child and magically levitating a dagger dangerously close to her neck, at which point if he so much as sees their horns glow he might make a twitch reaction that could potentially be lethal to said child.

This comic does not doubt the power potential of any of the Mane 6.

This is a situation where you have to ask yourself 'is it worth the risk that they might not succeed?'

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lordoffantasy In reply to Metal-Kitty [2013-10-24 06:45:42 +0000 UTC]

there is always a risk. however the risk for failure here it seems is enormously low. twilight sent a boulder flying an isntant after she flared up her horn, she can sieze a dagger just as lightning quickly i would say. best yet the distraction would allow rarity the oppurtunity ot perhaps not only rescue the filly, but smash the changling over the head when he is focusing on keeping his dagger.

the only possible way this could have failed is if the changling had another ally nearby, one who could potentionally harm the filly during the attempt. however it is clear the changling is there alone.

...............and i would dare say it was worth the risk. consdiering tiwlight has now been kdinapped and the filly is in no less danger. far as they know they will kill the filly when they are out of sight.

Metal-Kitty In reply to Lordoffantasy [2013-10-24 16:50:24 +0000 UTC]

One thing you don't consider - COULD Twilight take it from him?

Firstly, she has no idea how strong the changeling is.Β  Twilight is modest, and for all we know, not really unique in her telekinetic strength (rare, most likely, but maybe not unique).Β  If she tried to seize it, she runs the risk of not being strong enough to simply wrestle it away, and as such, her hubris could be a fatal mistake.

Secondly, in the case she might be stronger than the changeling, have you ever tried to wrestle something away from someone? The stronger may have the upper hand, but that does not always guarantee victory.Β  If he managed to put up a fight, the kid could be hurt in the struggle - among others.

What you suggest basically implies a shift in Twilight's character into something more arrogant and less worried about the situation at hand.

Also remember that when Twilight levitated the Ursa Minor, she was straining herself enough to dig into the dirt.Β  At her normal rate of exertion, even spinning a bunch of animals around seems to be taxing.

When writing a story, you have to consider the characters as more than 'numbers and facts' - you have to consider who they are, and what they think and feel.Β  Twilight is careful and calculating - too much so to risk a filly over something she has no evidence to support.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Lordoffantasy In reply to Metal-Kitty [2013-10-24 18:09:48 +0000 UTC]

of course it could well be this is no ordinary changling drone. however you gave no reason for twilight to consider whether orn ot this drone was more powerful than her. i know she strained over a ursa minor, any pony would, but the question is could this changling lift and ursa minor? and if it turns out that yes, this changling is different and is more dangerous than a normal drone, you have no provided any reason twilight would doubt her ability over a drone. she neither saw a drone of similar apeprance perform unnatural feats of power, nor was she given any reason to even suspect so.

i can't help but think this whole scenario is too contrived. the creature is a drone changling, creatures they have beaten the snot out of with ease, she lifted an ursa minor, rarity is the most skilled telekineticΒ  tiwlight has even seen, dwarfing her own abilities in the skill completely. the changling has shown no exceptional skills. the likelyhood of the filly being murdered even if they comply is so high that it would make the risk of injury more than acceptable to even twilight, if the choice is potential of getting killed, to absolutely being murdered.
this formula does not equal twilight giving up so easily. that last link there, the uncertainty of them actually sparing the filly, the likelyhood they would in fact dispose of the filly, would be the deciding factor for twilight. what would you think these beings, who tried to murder you, nearly killed your firends, and have shown to be dangerous, heartless creature, would do to a foal if she becomes useless?

Seriously, enjoy it or don't.

Lordoffantasy In reply to Metal-Kitty [2013-10-24 17:47:34 +0000 UTC]

..............the fact the changling is a drone comes to my mind. changling drones are obviously not very powerful creatures even at theri best. they rely on swarm tactics and even untrained combatants, aka the mane six, have shown to be able to overpower them easily. likely trained combatants could kill them easily, though their numbers can overwhelm. however this drone is alone, and he looks ancient as well.

by wexperience twilight would know she is much more powerful than this changling. also she would have to take into the account the high likelyhood that the filly would be killed whether or not they complied with their demands. in fact, it seems the likelyhood they would indeed murder the hostage once she is of no use considering how cruel changlings are and how vicious his ally was. obviously the changligns isn't here for food, to take a hostage and slowly drain them over their love and energy, it is here for the assassin. what use would they have of the filly after the assassin is freed and tiwlight is captive?

now if this was before she was nearly murdered herself i can see her making this mistake, and a mistake it is. she would have no experiences against them nor what they are capable and willing to do. she would have a farily good understanding now after nearly being beaten to death, hearing stories of how her friends had been assaulted, and seen that pegsus throwΒ  knife through fluttershy's ankle. one would reason they would merely kill this innoccent filly after she is of further use to not have to be burdened by her. twilight, after all these experiences so far, would rason that they had to risk the filly's safety or she would die. either the off chance a changlign drone can overpower both her and rarity, or the near certainty that the filly would be murdered if they complied.

onlu reason i KNOW she ain't dyin is because of that teaser, with mr. eyepatch talking to her. not even miss subconciously aware of the fourth wall pinkie pie would be able to think, oh they won't hurt the filly. you know they won't kill her, i know they won't kill her, but twilight has every single reason to believe they will murder her. it is not numbers and facts by any means, it is obsevations. would twilight truly have any reason, after nearly being murdered and seeing her friends lboodied and bruised, to think the enemy would not kill the filly? would she have any reason to believe that she could not overpower a mere changlign drone, especially with help? she is smart and careful yes, but she has already experienced what these ponies are capable and willing of. i think twilight would reason that the risk of injury to the filly was worth it when all evidence points to them disposing of her ater she is no longer of use.

Okay, now I'm convinced you're just trying to be annoying.

'Rarity is the strongest telekinetic Twilight has ever seen' - Where the heck did you get THIS? Nothing has ever implied Rarity is stronger than the average telekinetic.

'The changeling is just a drone' - Have you even been reading the comic? Have you not really looked at the 'changeling'?

You also assume Twilight and Rarity, either one, are arrogant and careless enough to put a filly's life at greater risk on a hunch that they are super-powerful, are able to remove themselves from the emotions of the past hundred-something pages, and would have to have forgotten they're fighting things the likes of which are not normal.

Your argument draws too much from a removed standpoint.

Lordoffantasy In reply to Metal-Kitty [2013-10-25 01:15:25 +0000 UTC]

for starters, i acutally REALLY like the comic, largely in concept. instead of random acts of chaos, be it discord, nightmare moon, parasprites, or the changlings, it is an organization capable of releasing both monster and elite agents. that......reminds largely about a fanfiction project i have been working on......... largely this part is well executed to a t. they are clearly a threat, though admitably some of my prior critiques were because of a lack of information and taking the wrod bomb too literally.........
however i do feel soemtimes it does nto take advantage of certain factors. i saw you used big mac to basically seismic toss that mutant to its doom. referencing him as strong....... yet at other times you ignore such potential........ oddly since you basically made big mac super powerful by throwing a god damn mutant off a cliff, if it did cost him.
for example rarity. while on one hand you referenced she has martial arts training, you decide not to potentionally use her obvious talent in telekinesis as a method she could use to defend herself nor even reference the potential she oculd use it to help save the filly. both twilight and rarity should considerable magical talents, twilight being more broad in range and rarity more narrowed if sharper. it is not too much of a stretch of creativity and logic to think twilight could force a telekinetically lifted object out of the enemy's mystical grip, or at least struggle with them over it, or do it so quickly she oculd create and opening. nor having rarity sieze something during this distraction and simultaneously save the filly and break something over the changling's head.

however i an not knocking the story at all, just this decision. you ahve some god damn brilliant ideas when it comes to the story. how both luna and celestia were forced to either surrender or consent was totally in character. basically the enemy managed to keep ucnertainty in the hearts and minds of the princesses and thus force them to agree to the terms. i loved that dragon pony's backstory, though i never got to see how he ended up turning from a disfigured stallion to a mutant and find it odd that he could take boulders to the face yet celestia killed him so easily. in large the execution of this sotry of an organized, mysteriuos force attacking equstria is beutfiully done, and does not tread too far into the darkness. just felt these last few pages were somehwere between rushed and contrived a bit.

simply flet that something was missing between twilight releasing the assassin and being given the ultimatum. there was simply tyhe threat and the release, and no conflict about them inbetween. they jsut lost almost everything, both the friend they just recently realized sitll had a pulse, the filly, and their hostage. that was just too quick for such a large amount of loss at once. feel as if they just gave up in an instant, and it makes all the loss seem to just their sutpidity than anything else. if they dispalyed far more conflicted opinions over what to do next, and we got to see what is going on in their head,s that would be....... well not another story, but it would definitiely improve things.
....definitely if we could see what twilight was thinking. would be rather dramatic to learn how desperately she was trying to figureo ut an alternative to this situation, and if she considered force yet rejected it then i would not say another word about that because twilight could not bring herself to make a cold decision as whether or not she could rescue the filly with minimal harm. as is, it seems they just cave in without any thoguhts of the consequences.

Lordoffantasy In reply to Metal-Kitty [2013-10-25 06:06:03 +0000 UTC]

......second point is how is rarity and twilight being exceptional at magic any more extreme that big mac performing a seismic toss to a giant cannibal mutant? in fact i would dare say big mac throwing a giant mosnter off a cliff is far more the extreme, if sitll plausible considering he can buck a tree bare with a single leg.

third opint, i do actually like this story, i just feel that this part is definitely far too rushed. leaves me questioning why they did not consider other options............... and the sotry has not exactly explained WHY the changlings this organization uses, like thsi guy, are differnt, or if they are of any benefit over theri normal brethren...........definitley the massacre that was shown has done little to advocate theri abilities.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Lordoffantasy In reply to Metal-Kitty [2013-10-25 05:55:23 +0000 UTC]

kay then let me shorten my thoughts.

think ya missed an oppurtunity here for twilight is the short of it. i truly feel there needs to be more to this scene than simply them caving in immediately. think largely why i was speculating on ways they could have defeated the changling is because i do not know what they were thinking during this scene. what was going through their minds? it begs to be expanded on. i dobut that her friends owuld be willing to just cave in without something to say, especially rainbow dash. she would probably find confidence in the fact the enemy is a changling, something they have pulverised dozens of before. and they would have no, i repeat, NO reason to believe this guy was any different to a normal changling......... the scene transition to them just letting the assassin go so quickly it leaves me reeling and wondering why? i am not saying twilight would not cave in, would definitely believe it, but i doubt she would do so quietly and without thinking about it.
