And I don't see it with the crown, besides the fact both have pointy bits, which is a common thing among crowns.

I mean, if you'd have compared him to Maleficent from Disney's Sleeping Beauty, then I could at least understand. High collar of doom, devil-horn crown, sure. But when the comparisons have only vague similarities? It's a head scratcher, that is.

Not defensive at all. I'm being compared by the shape of pony faces and the fact he's wearing a metal ring with pointy bits on it (as many crowns are wont to do). I'm lost on how people take take a concept so generic, so vague, so common and try to narrow it to some sort of trivial (and often strained) reference. It often feels like trying to describe color to a blind person. It'd be one thing if it was uncommon enough that I could understand the comparison, but saying this character shares Sombra's face shape is like saying he shares Big Macintosh's face shape, or Doctor Hooves', or Pokey Pierce's, or just about any other stallion in MLP. Now, if his face looked like Bulk Biceps', that'd be another thing, but otherwise, pony face-shapes are not very varied.
People aren't even trying anymore. They grab the laziest comparisons they can find, and it seems they need a comparison.

I guess what I'm wondering, especially after reading comments on some other pages, is why comparisons are such a bad thing. People often are comparing your designs to things they LIKE, and you frequently seem to take it like they're knocking it with something they DON'T like, even when the similarities they quote are broad enough to be completely subjective. Art school pet peeve or something?

Because more often than not they are asking if I'm inspired by something stupid based on vague/common tropes, or thinking entire characters are shout-outs if not outright copied. Sometimes, it's understandable, but most times people pick the dumbest, most trivial, most vague, most common things to point out. Wizards have been wearing high-collar cloaks a long time before Naruto was even an idea. Ireland was doing redheads with facial hair long before Ganondorf existed.
In short, a lot of times I get comparisons so vague, so silly that I feel like my IQ drops just having read them.
