Not so much those with magic - it reacts to magic differently depending on what the magic does. For Earth ponies, it severs their ties to the earth and cripples their physical strength. For pegasi it steals their ability to fly or manipulate weather. For spell casters it burns them from the inside out. Think of it as a Mana burn type spell on a wide scale.

I apologize in advance for my prolixity, but as the story is proceeding until now I have started to think about what is the reason because, realistically, that bastard could still be so untouchable...
Ok... Maybe I'm saying bullshit of biblical proportions, but...
Well, putting the case that in this context the theory "Mana * Concentration => Magic" and "Magic + Willpower = Spell" is respected, where "the Mana (spiritual energy) of the caster is channeled to the outside of his body under form of pure energy (or arcane energy, if you prefer) that through the willpower of the caster and with the possible help of magic formulas (or pentacles, crystals and/or other enchanted items...) is then directed to a target with the intention of triggering a reaction (the spell itself)", then it follows that the energy to invest in a spell is greater the larger/powerful is the effect we want to achieve from it without forgetting how long the spell will be kept active.
Not for nothing, spells like fireballs or enchanted glyphs require a great deal of magical energy, but once the spell is casted it is no longer necessary to convey additional Mana on it to make it work, like instead of telekinesis or protective shields, for examle.
In fact, spells like protective barriers require a tremendous amount of magic, not only to block the attacks (more powerful is the force to be contrasted, more Mana you must use) but also to be able to maintain such spell active for the necessary time, which therefore requires not only a remarkable amount of energy, but also an immense concentration ability, which in turn consumes energy...
Moreover, according to those that are the standard canons of magic, when a magician finishes his Mana he has three options (when giving up is not an option):
- Benefit from a physical source of alternative energy (enchanted crystals, magical staff and/or magic wands, energy wells, portals, etc...);
- Ask for the power to an ally (or earthly extraplanar) or invoke a supernatural intervention (elemental spirits, ancestral spirits and guardians, ghosts, angels, gods, demons ... choice of the caster);
- Convert into Mana vital energies of a sacrificial victim rather than their own (typical trick of necromancy...).
Said that, I would say that with the amount of spells that bastard has casted so far, together with the enchanted shield, without forgetting that the ritual, although temporarily interrupted but yet activated... Well, it seems impossible to believe that he has such an amount of power to afford all this expenditure of energy, especially considering that until recently was virtually a dead body, and qanta energy may have previously assimilated, this is clearly excessive...
Ergo, it is logical to assume that he is taking advantage of an external power source while he likes to play at being a god. Obviously he keeps well hidden both the place and the nature of this source of power, and he takes advantage of this "aura of invincibility" to terrify and demoralize his opponents.
However, the haste that he seems to have also leads me to believe that the source of his power, whatever it is, is running out, so it is important for him to end the fight quickly, in order to avoid being left without sufficient energy to complete the ritual, thus failing his intent...
