Description

Slade Masters was a kid who displayed exceptional physical gifts from an early age, described as “photographic reflexes” by a psychiatrist who examined him. He would employ this ability for his own personal gain, most notably becoming the star pitcher of his high school baseball team after watching one pro baseball game. However, his life would take a dramatic turn after he watched WWII-era footage of the American Knight in action and used his skills to take down a group of robbers holding up a bank. One of the patrons happened to be an agent with the secretive espionage agency S.M.A.R.T. (Strategic Metahuman Advanced Response Team), who offered Slade a job.

Slade quickly proved himself as a top agent and was even drafted to serve as a trainer for new recruits. It was during one of his missions he was tasked with tracking down an elderly scientist who had served the Nazis and was attempting to recreate the same super soldier serum that turned Steven Wayne into the American Knight and then sell it to the highest bidder. He arrived to find the man dying, but convinced him that he could use the serum for his own use. Having grown bored with his duties and feeling underappreciated by his superiors, Slade injected himself with the chemical and found his existing abilities magnified to even greater levels, yet the sample wasn't properly stabilized and cost him his sanity.

Returning to the States, Slade crafted a new identity as a mercenary known for always getting his man, a “master of death” as one acquaintance described it. He then took the name “Deathmaster” and would offer his services to the highest bidder and come to clash with several heroes in the process, including the deadly defender of Bright City, the Reaper, who shot out his right eye with a well-placed shot.
