Description
America smiled at his reflection in his mirror. He remembered like yesterday when Abraham Lincoln was elected.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
A few months earlier
America had left the white house that day and headed over to where a crowd of people were gathering outside of the Capital building. No one would notice him and if they did, then they would think he was just a normal citizen. Voters and non-voters were all waiting to hear who got elected and had no time to notice him it made America proud to see the democratic process at work.
He looked up at the top of the stairs to see the four candidates waiting for the results. He was nervous for them. The result of this election could change the future of the country.
William Pennington, the Speaker of the House, exited the Capital building with a sealed envelope in his hand. The crowd stirred in excitement. The newspaper reporters fumbled with their paper and writing utensil, waiting in anticipation.
William slowly ripped open the envelope and pulled the sheet of paper out. He looked around at the crowd and said, "Your next President of the United States is…Abraham Lincoln!"
Abraham grinned and kissed his wife on the cheek. America smiled brightly as many people cheered. Some disappointed people booed or shuffled away in disappointment. America was slipped a piece paper. Lincoln had won by a landslide! America liked him. He embodied the true American spirit.
A crowd of supporters surrounded the newly elected official, wanting to shake his hand. America allowed himself to be pushed forward in the crowd until he reached the front.
The tall and lanky man looked at America with a twinkle in his eye. He offered his hand to the country, America took it and the pair shook hands.
"It will be great working with you, Boss," America grinned.
"And it will be an honor to serve you. I hope I do not disappoint."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
America smiled at this good memory. Abraham was the first president to recognize him right on the spot since the founding fathers. Thomas Jefferson talked to America a lot. He took pride in their friendship. But nothing could beat fighting side by side with George Washington. America's eyes fell on the toy soldier sitting on his dresser. He quickly put
it in a draw, just in case England came and saw it.
America stood by the entrance of his house, waiting for his ride to arrive. It was then there was a knock on America's door. He opened it to see a group of states standing there with their arms crossed.
"What's wrong? What's going on?" he asked.
Texas, a loud spoken boy who had at one time been his own nation spoke first, "Boss we
have a bone to pick with ya."
"Yes?"
Alabama and Georgia two sweet little Southern Belles looked at each other and fixed their dresses. Florida, a normally very relaxed guy was fidgeting nervously. Louisiana fixed his golden locks; he looked so much like France. Mississippi looked at South Carolina; the two men looked like they were discussing something mentally. South Carolina nodded.
"We all voted…and because of the election of Abraham Lincoln we have decided…" Mississippi started and hesitated.
"We're leaving the Union. We can't have that negro lover in charge of the government," South Carolina hissed.
"You can't!" America cried.
"Our economy thrives on slavery, Papa…" Georgia whispered.
"Darling, we depend too much on the cash crops to lose our source of cheap labor," Alabama lectured.
"Miss Ally is right. We depend too much on slavery," Louisiana said, his accent slightly French.
"It's Alabama!" the southern belle huffed and started to fan herself.
America stared at the Southern states, "I…Don't understand…"
"Look. We're leaving to make our own country. We don't want to be a part of you anymore," South Carolina tsked.
The Southern states looked at America as he stood in shock. One by one they turned to leave, led by South Carolina. Georgia paused for a second and gave America a peck on the cheek, "I'm sorry, Papa."
America fell to his knees, rain started to pour from the sky. Was…was this how England felt when America left to gain independence? Should he just let the states go? Or should he fight to keep them?
"Whew! That went better than I thought!" Florida cheered.
"Yes. I swear! I was sweating like a sinner in church!" Alabama said.
"A beautiful sinner at that~" Louisiana flirted.
Alabama whacked him with her fan.
"Do…Do you think we did the right thing?" Georgia asked.
"Of course you did!" a dark figure said as he approached them. He drug his club along in
the dirt, "It's about time you ditched that loser."
"Who the hell are you?" Texas asked, pointing a pistol at him.
The man held up his hands, "Hey now. I'm on your side!"
The man pushed the dark colored lenses up his nose, so they covered his eyes and smirked wildly.
"You can call me…the Confederate States of America."
