Now, I grant you, it's been a while since I've done anything with welding or mechanical work, but isn't that a little dangerous?

Nah, people are pretty fire proof..

yeah, but people are not flying-grinder-disc-bits proof

yeah, but flying bits of grinder disc are not good for the skin.

The sparks look so unreal! There's a painting-like feeling in the picture and I love it. The arch that her body makes looks nice, too.

Was this taken during the day or at night? The idea is wonderful. I hope you experiment with this more and come up with more exciting ideas!

Maybe this is what time travel looks like. Cool shot! Very striking.

i've been considering the same concept... thank you for allowing us to see your metadata. it is very helpful... great work... please pass on congrats to the model as 14 seconds is a very long time.

well thats how long the shutter was open.. the spark where most likely 2-3 sec.

Off to a terrific start, may friend! You've definitely captured the essence.

Impressive, and the sparks rebounding are a sight to see. That said... watch out, if you shear off too large a bit of slag it stops being slag and starts being shrapnel lol.

Absolutely awesome! I want more. I love sparks to begin with, but the linear quality in this photo would have been enough. Then you went a threw a person in front of the sparks and that just added so many dimensions for the eye to follow. If it doesnt really hurt, i would try to hit her with as many sparks as are hitting her legs, that would be something to see.

You are right, something got miss-sampled there. The high res version looks off. The watermark is wrong as well, so I know it's not something in the base image.
Scherf you should output a fresh copy from Aperture. It should look a lot better than it does.

I'm always amazed at those that use this technique....well-done!

Very very good.
I'm always looking for reference photos for comic book illustrations. Not stock, just references. This looks like a frequent action-comic scene, the birth of a hero(ine) or an attack by some enemy with fairydust on steroids.
Thanks.

Glad you tried your hand at the sparks. Wicked. What was the lighting you used in addition to the sparks? At 14s I would have thought there would have been more motion in the model. Overall good shot, with only things would be her elbow being cropped off. Rock on

first hand knowledge?

yeah, my emphasis for my BFA was Small Metals. So I occasionally worked steel on grinders. even wearing goggles and a face shield, you can still get those things flying up there. But wearing a respirator just seemed like overkill. In retrospect, a dust mask might have been a good idea.
