The PS "trickery" works, however. I am pretty sure I know how it was done, but that does not detract from the power of the image. In fact, if I am right, it is really just a little turn of things, and that is so very minor in the range of PS "tricks" some digital photographers regularly use.
This image is really wonderful. Lighting, composition, tonal range... it all works.
