Description
Ok so tonight I tried to burn all Brooke's hair off. Just kidding. She bravely decided to tackle the sparkers of DOOM. This image is a mix of LP-Sparklers, Flash and a fog machine... oh yeah and Brooke of course. Since the last time I tried sparkers I've learned the joy of a wet floor. No more firesShe's still a trouper. I'm still impressed.
Model = Brooke

After seeing the daily deviation, I've looked through your gellery and you are such a talented photographer. This one's by far one of my favorites. I have a thing for sparkles, really. Wonderful use of colors and shapes, and the model did a great job too.

beautiful photo ... was the room completely dark besides the sparkler? ... looks like you got the exposure right on, too bad about the aperture though, but that's the way it is without a ND filter

Hmm.. not sure why you advocate a ND filter. This is technically lightpainting. However the main light hitting the model is from a flash gridded down from above.

Oh, I'm definitely not an advocate of using a ND filter unless it's a last resort ... I just don't like the distortion and lack of sharpness that's caused by using such a small aperture
With a ND, you could have shot at a much larger aperture, and yet still had the 40/1 shutter and used the flash β¦ there have only been a few occasions where I've used them, but when I needed them, they sure came in handy
(BTW, just so you know, I'm not talking out my ass, I have a 1DsMk2 also, along with 3 other pro bodies and 30+ lenses to play with so I know that particular camera, and probably that lens you were using too) β¦ Adorama loves me
As I'm sure you know, every lens is a little different, but all of them have a sweet spot, and itβs never at the small end of the aperture, and itβs almost never at wide open either β¦ just optical physics, nothing to be done about it really β and depending on the lens that Iβm using, I get the best results in the F3.5-F11 range β very occasionally F2.8 with a real nice ancient Ziess Jenna, but not with any of the newer glass β¦ thatβs why it seemed a little off that you were at F20 and I figured you must have had a good reason ... was this a choice, or a constraint?
I understand that you were kind of stuck because you needed enough time for her to spin up that sparkler without blowing out the highlights ... I'm assuming that you were using the lowest possible ISO, so besides stopping the aperture to it's smallest setting, an ND would have been the only choice you had left
this isn't meant as a criticism in ANY way ... far from it, I love this photo ... I'm just wondering why you would chose to shoot in an aperture range that's almost always undesirable
the fact that you used a flash adds a whole new angle on this and makes this an extraordinary photo β¦ this was obviously either a super lucky shot, or more likely, a very well thought out shot β¦ not many people would have gotten this good of a photo from this on their first go

no... Brooke is her own tuntable. She held the sparklers and spun.

Then I am doubly impressed as you were able to capture her standing erect and she was able to spin without wobbling.
