The technique you used is so easy, I can't believe I didn't think of trying that yet!
A for Affort buddy, good jop, though some of the area's around the cloud are really rough and scratchy.
Did you make the actual smoke from images in photoshop?
Or it's just another something I myself am considering to try.

I don't understand how the explosion itself created a multicolored implosion of smoke. (rainbow) Though it doesn't make sense, at least it looks pretty.
Don't overuse your overlays bro.
besides that, shading is damn good as usual, seems more time was put into those individual clouds of smoke this time. (every single dark patch detailed) gotta say, it has the anime feel a bit more than usual. (feels like the smoke is curling inwards now instead of just fading off to the side or some shit. which..is great)

Very pretty explosion. If I may, the two shock waves that emmit at the bottom feel a little uncanny to me.
To my view, It inferrs that the explosion came from the center of the screen, wherras I think this is supposed to be a mushroom cloud.
