what trick do you use to do the gradient with the tone/pattern?

i tried experimenting a little, like with a gradient layer and a pattern layer, then putting the gradient layer on multiple over the pattern..i think it worked

there is one layer of the hat where the pattern is seen, then above is a layer with a Clipping Mask (Ctrl+Alt+G) and has a gradient on that with the opacity slightly down.
