Everything about this is gorgeous! Love the texture, love the colors, love the shape...I'm in awe. Out of random curiosity, what quality did you render this at?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MichaelFaber In reply to rubikscubefreak [2008-01-29 01:41:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment RΒ³F! I think this was rendered at 4000 quality. I usually set the quality to 4000, and stop it when i think it has had enough. This one was smaller than most of my renders, so it was done before i got back to my computer.

You truly are a master of the program, then, because how you can get that smooth of a texture with only 4000 escapes me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MichaelFaber In reply to rubikscubefreak [2008-01-30 01:21:33 +0000 UTC]

it was actually rendered at 3840 x 2400 and scaled down for the Internet. Quality = 4000 is still pretty high. The full res version is not much different.

Things to consider if you find you have to render higher are:
* How much of the fractal is outside of the rendered image? - If you take a look at the extended render statistics, it will tell you the hit point ratio. If it says 100%, then all of the fractal is in the frame. Most times it will be less because something is cropped out. If you crop a significant amount out, then you are effectively reducing the Quality. Think your HPR is about 50%? Double the Quality at render time.

* Are there any really bright spots? - If there are places that are really really bright compared to the rest of the image, then they are taking away from the rest of the fractal, making those places grainy.

* Is your gamma too high? - Increasing the Gamma brightens up dark areas. That means the grainier a place is, the more it is brightened.

Huh....thanks for the input, I never thought about some of that! I knew about the gamma, but I didn't realize about the bright spots or the HPR. Thanks! *takes notes*

I think a different gradient might have played more to its cyborg-potential (electronica suspended in sinuous membranes), but the contrast of sharp-blurred is quite wonderful

Is this a photo of the inside of your brain?

Another piece which raises the bar in Apo. The large scale structure and textures are clearer and more separate than similar recent works, and there is plenty to explore.

the fractal structure is very nice in this flame
the colours suit it well too
but the little jags on the big white spines disturb the composition..
although i got problems with these jags myself
