How are these done? Painted entirely based on references in photoshop? Or built on top of existing photos?

these are rendered in 3d (cinema 4d) with a bit of retouching in photoshop.
i use references from nasa and also textures that nasa provides

I'm guessing spheres in a 3D programm like 3DMax, textured with satellite photos of the planets. The textures might also be painted with references..
