That is a brilliant capture. It almost seems surreal, with the water so smooth and calm, blending right up into the sky.

You really made a fantastic photograph here... Makes me thing of a photograph that won a nikon award a few years ago. I would opt for a square composition, to make the photograph stronger. How did you see this/these dolphins if i may ask? Is it typical to go by boat onto the sea to view them?

Thank you. It comes down to preference of format and I liked both equally much. Yes a square composition works also well but I went for this format by just flipping the coin. Both looked good and had the same massage.
Very early in the morning we took two small boats, about 8-10 people in every boat, from Ponta Delgada and headed three-four km east by the coast. All of the guides were marine biologist and they had spotters on the coast cliffs, that had a better view over the waters, to locate and lead us to the dolphins and whale(s). That morning we saw two types of dolphins and a sperm whale.
Yes it is typical to go by boat and to see them if the weather is good. But if you go for it take a company than know what they are doing; smaller boats, knowledgeable guides etc. It will cost you a little bit more, but you will definitely not regret it. And go as early as you can, then there is a bigger chance to see them before they go deeper and further into the sea.
Thank you again.
