Description Part by part
conciously or otherwise
reality is built
before our eyes...

I was discouraged when I was younger from doing drawings like this.. teachers.. peers.. said it made me look crazy... guess they were wrong...

Had a lot of encouragement from ~EyeOfMaharet777 and was truly inspired by her work.... so after over ten years I have picked up my pencil...

I think it will be a bit more polished if I ink it... but I like it otherwise... I am open to critiques, but with circumstances being what they are, I ask that you be gentle...

tools...
1 8 1/2x 11 sheet of paper, a mechanical pencil, and only a slightly deranged imagination. lol.

Hey have you tried redoing it in ps?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

milleniumsentry In reply to rainydaysaint [2006-08-26 01:24:09 +0000 UTC]

this is the battleplan thus far...

leave original intact... kind of a commemerative kinda thing... (and to not wreck it. ha ha).. I have scanned it, lightened the opacity to almost invisible and reprinted... currently half way through reinking.

inking the outlines... then looking for a good vectorizer program for use in the future... (can't seem to find a good shareware one, even for CAD)

once I have the outlines inked and scanned, do a final inking for shading...

this will give me two finals plus the orginal just in case I mess up the inking and I can then move to ps...

This however, was more of a traditional exercise, so I am avoiding pulling out anything digital other than tools to scan for this project I think.

So far.. so good.

I like this kind of stuff. I'd like to see more depth in these types of drawings though. They usually look a little too 2D.

milleniumsentry In reply to hkdesign [2006-08-26 01:26:29 +0000 UTC]

yeah. I agree. I am currently in the middle of inking this and then I will be shading it...

still on the fence as to whether I should use hatching or stippling.. I think hatching will preserve the detail's and bring out the curvature of the pipes a bit better compared to stippling though.. so will probably go with that.

this was worked on in 1 to 1/12 hour chunks over the last week and a half while my computer was rendering fractals. Gave me something to do other than watch tv. lol.

at first glance it looks like a scribbled kind of thing, but when you look closer it's much more detailed. nice job!

Glad you like it though. I will hopefully have a cleaner version out in the near future.

dude, you are crazy for sure! But that's more of a good thing The amount of detail is amazing and if i consider that you actually know what each part should be doing, respect!
C'mon, build the hypercube before our eyes and crash the continuum of existence!

'bout the hypercube... the cult I was running had one up and ready to go but I spilled jolt cola on it and it turned into a twinkie.... (see, now THAT is crazy. lolz) Says it won't expire until 2026 though, so that's gotta be a good thing somewhere.

Well I must say that this is really freakin cool!! I can't believe people would discourage you from doing this. I love how everything is interconnected and some of the joints and little sub-pump/powersupply/generators look like they have faces and some things look like they have eyes. It's alive with life yet still machinery. Incredible, that's all I gotta say. The detail is unbelievable. The only thing I think I would do, and this is just me, would be to shade the stuff in the back a little darker to give it more of a 3D look or create more depth. But if you do, make sure to be careful and not lose any of the details or make the objects/pipes look flat. I'm sure you know what I mean.

Great job though, I am seriously impressed and think you should do some of these a little more often along with your usual.

Thank you very much...

For more than the comment/critique... You may have found it passing conversation, but seeing your work, and talking to you about it really got me motivated to try this sort of thing again. I absolutely love patterns, and honestly didn't think there were people who enjoyed work like this. Everyone I would show my work to when I was younger would give me strange looks, or tell me to draw more traditional things so it didn't seem like I was on drugs...

now it seems like they were the ones on them...

about the shading... I totally agree. It is actually shaded about the least I possibly could get away with at the moment.. (the bottom right sphere is a testament to this) and I am not entirely sure what to do about it..

Normally, what I would do is ink.. then shade with the ink pen.. but since I am still erasing like a fiend, I thought it better to mebee wait until I had drawn a couple more things before attacking it... as I mentioned before, my confidence levels aren't what they used to be... and to shade this while preserving details with an ink pen.. *ack*

there are other issues I am on the fence about too though... As I didn't use a ruler, if I were to ink, I'd probably need one, which would make the lines... errr.. too clean.. if that makes any sense.. I think it would end up being very tedious and clinical if I did that..

decisions decisions.. I might to a light shading in a soft hb if I can find one.. that would preserve the details as I was taught to push your final lines into the page when using a mechanical pencil to preserve them...

anyway.. I am rambling...

and grinnin' inside that you picked up on all the little faces....

thanks again.. truly... and I will keep making more, that is for sure. Now that I know better anyway.

Yes, I totally agree. I get strange looks to this day when people see some of the stuff I do, also, I am covered in tattoo's and body piercings, so that doesnt really help my so called 'strange' situation. But I have learned that it is there loss not mine that they choose to stereotype me as some sort of psycho and not want to know me further or look past my exterior. I have always believed that art is an expression of self and once it stops being that you might as well be dead inside. So I change for no one, I will be the stone the water crashes and breaks upon.

You did a damn good job on this and however you feel about adding the finishing pieces I'm sure it will be more than superb. Just don't lose the little faces. LOL. Oh and your most definitely welcome, glad I could be there for you or be your source of inspiration, whatever I can do to help.

:beams:

I don't have tat's or piercings... yet... I was planning on getting my back tattoo for my 30th, but will probably chicken out and get something on my shoulder...

have three holes in each ear... want to get my eyebrow done, but probably wouldn't be able to pull it off... *shrug* lolz

All in all, I like the piece... but I think the delivery could have been stronger.. but that's to be expected of your first piece in a while... felt a lot of it coming back though... *yay* and will be doing a remake of it in the future more than likely... It was definately a smashing warmup and I had a lot of fun exercising my brain coming up with a lot of it... It's a mode of thinking I truly missed.

So.. wish me luck I guess.. Will try to pull off something worthy of joining mindoflead and mebee (just mebee once the fear of it settles) joining ExquisiteCorpse... that whole dual artist thing really has my interest.

and I will do my best to keep the little guys intact if I attack it with a pen. lolz.

LOL, that's the spirit. I'm sure it will all come back to you and each piece you do will be better and better. Occasionally you do the 'huh', like what the hell is this thing my hand drew and the pitch it to the trash, but you can only get better with practice, encouragement, and constructive critisim. That's why we love DA so much.

When you gain your courage and join the EC, I would love to do a corpse with you. (LOL, everytime I say that it makes me laugh.) Whad'ya say?

Am bout a third of the way thru inkin this bad boy... I cheated, lightened the scan, and printed it out ultra light... that way I don't have to be paranoid bout messin' with the original. heh heh..

I think it was a smart move. I was really nervous working on the first... and I think, with it being uneraseable, and my first piece in a long while.. it just stressed me out to much to want to draw on it... Now, I can ink and without much worry.. most I waste is a piece of paper and some time.. which.. thankfully, hasn't happened yet.

the funniest part of doing this tho.. (and something I didn't think about) was that the original pic was right to the edges of the sheet, but when I printed it... margins... so the darned thing ended up being even smaller... lol, ya live and learn I guess... but no harm done in the end I don't think.

I think the photocopy was a good idea too because details I wanted to abondon could be without to much problem... there were a few mistakes I wanted to get rid of off the first and this allowed me to do it.

I dunno, the whole process is being almost too pleasant. lolz. It's kind of surreal....
