Raku is easy to do, but it is VERY dangerous!! I do NOT recommend trying to do it unless you have the proper training, facilities and spotters! 
But because it IS easy to set up by already established studios... maybe you can bring it up to the art department/ceramic instructors at your college? Get a program rolling!

thank you! i find a good rule of thumb for raku glazes is higher reduction really brings out the metallic colors.
