Description
Green slime oozes from the timber wolves mouths. Their large wooden paws gouge into the earth as they stalk slowly forward. Sugar and Infinity stand outside the cart, one on each side to help protect the young pony children that cower in fear. Chiffon is quickly at work trying to fix the cart. Big Macintosh stands close at hand, helping out by lifting the cart high enough for Chiffon to wiggle under it. He keeps a wary eye on the pack of wolves. The leader of the wolves, the biggest and ugliest of the strange creatures steps forward. It snarls hungrily at the tasty looking ponies. Glowing green eyes narrow as it readies itself for an attack.
“Chiffon you better hurry, these wolves don’t look like they plan on letting us leave here in one piece!” Sugar hisses at her brother.
“I’m going as fast as I can!” Chiffon whispers back. The sound of banging hooves can be heard from underneath the cart.
The lead wolf howls into the night sky and lunges forward. The pack follows suit. Sugar spreads her wings open and launches herself at the leader. Her motherly side compels her forward. She wants to protect these children at any costs.
“I will not let you harm these children!” she snarls. She narrows her lime green eyes in anger at the beasts.
She smacks into the leader of the pack. The timber wolf slides back an inch or two. Not much of a threat to such a huge beast. It swats at Sugar, claws extended. She quickly lunges to the left, feeling the claw catch the back of her long pink mane. The wolf snarls again in anger. To the wolf, Sugar is no more than a very persistent fly. She zooms in back and forth, over and under. Doing anything she can to keep the wolf’s attention away from the broken cart full of children.
Infinity stays with the cart, silently cursing the fact that he can’t help his sister. While she does a good job of distracting the biggest of the wolves, he is left to face off with the rest of the pack. His green eyes spark with the thought of adventure. He keeps his attention at the wolves and he stamps his hoof into the ground. Once. Twice. He snorts angrily.
The kids cower in the cart, a few of them crying out for their parents.
“Don’t worry kids, we’ll get you back home. I promise.” Infinity says to the kids.
Suddenly a timber wolf lunges towards the cart. Infinity spins around and rear kicks the wolf right in the muzzle. It howls and rears back, its paws rising to its nose.
“There’s more where that came from!” Infinity yells.
The children cheer him on. He readies himself as the wolf charges him again. He jumps up as the wolf hits the dirt. “Get along little doggy!” Infinity shouts as the wolf tries to buck him off. He stamps hard on the wolf’s back before jumping off. He kicks at one of the wolf’s rear legs, sending it whimpering back through the trees.
Chiffon is fast at work under the cart. “Dang it! This job would be so much easier if I had my tools,” he exclaims angrily. He knows he can’t retrieve them and he wouldn’t dare leave his siblings or the kids. He barks orders at Big Macintosh to find him a handful of sticks and some tree sap.
“Eeyup,” Big Mac says with a nod of the head. He skirts around the other side of the cart and looks around in the nearby brush for the needed items. He returns a minute later with them in his mouth and quickly deposits them at the edge of the cart.
Chiffon sticks his head out from underneath. His orange and green striped mane is dirty with dust. Small leaves are caught in it. He sees the items he asked for and thanks Big Macintosh before ducking back under. Noises echo out from underneath the cart as he hurriedly tries to fix it. He can hear Sugar and Infinity out there fighting and he want to help them, but the kids are more important for the time being. He knows he needs to help get them to safety before helping his sibling battle the timber wolf ambush.
Sugar is still flying in a complex pattern around the lead wolf, but she can see its attention is waning. The wolf is no longer trying to swat her away and instead starts stalking toward the cart again. Sugar flies in front of its face and aims a hoof at the large glowing green eye. She jabs forward as hard as she can.
The timber wolf leader howls in pain and swats at Sugar. Its paw connected and she is sent sprawling into the ground.
“Sugar!” Infinity yells. He rushes to help his sister off the ground. “Are you okay?”
Sugar shakes her head back and forth to clear the spots forming over her eyes. She spreads her wings, ready to take off again. A sharp jolting pain in her left wing stops her from taking off. She cries out and looks at her wing. It is bent at an odd angle. Sugar knows without a doubt that it is broken. Infinity’s green eyes are wide with worry for his sister.
“I’ll be fine!” She hollers at him. “On your right!”
Infinity spins around and jumps back right as a timber wolf’s jaws snap inches from where he stood. Wow he got me by the tips of my mane, Infinity looks down at his short light blue tail.
There are still four timber wolves approaching, Infinity return his attention to the threat stalking slowly toward them.
“Chiffon please tell me you are almost done fixing the cart. Cause we could really use your help.” Sugar says nervously. With her wing broken she can’t move around as much as she wanted and she doesn’t like feeling this vulnerable. She moves slowly back against the cart.
“Done!” Chiffon hollered triumphantly from under the cart. He slides out from under it and comes to stand with Sugar and Infinity. The four wolves rush forward as a single unit. Chiffon sprints ahead, taking off into the air. He catches a wolf under the jaw and with a loud CRACK the timber wolf falls out of line, holding its broken jaw and whimpering.
With the cart now fixed, Infinity helps get Big Mac saddled up. While the three siblings keep the attention of the timber wolves,Big Macintosh with the cart-full of kids, sneaks around the fight and back to the safe haven of Ponyville.
Infinity quickly returns to the fight in time to tackle a timber wolf that had cornered his wounded sister Sugar. The wolf falls to the ground with Infinity atop it. He stamps on the creature’s side roughly. He hears a few twigs that make up the wolf’s body snap and it lets out a howl. It shoves Infinity off and hobbles off into the forest.
“Ha!” Infinity calls out in victory.
“Thanks.” Sugar huffs between breaths. “Where are the kids?” She asks concerned.
“There’s that motherly instinct I love,” Infinity giggles. He explains what went down while Sugar was cornered.
Sugar sighs in relief at the kids safety and hugs her brother for his quick thinking.
“Hey!” Chiffon yells, “Can you two stop the hug fest and get over here and help me!”
The last two timber wolves had Chiffon backed against a tree. They snarled angrily, green acidic saliva drooling from their open mouths. Their razor sharp teeth glinted in the moonlight. Sugar and Infinity gallop to their brother’s aid.
The two remaining wolves seem to be pups. They are much smaller than their pack mates. Sugar has yet to put her special talent to use. She figured this was the best time to see if it would work in this type of situation. She stands in front of Chiffon, in a protective stance and begins to sing.
Her voice is like smooth honey, and the young timber pups immediately turn their attention to her, entranced by her sing song voice. She backs away slowly, the pups follow after her.
There is a sudden roar and the leader of the pack storms toward her. Chiffon and Infinity begin to rush to her side, to protect her from the lead timber wolf. The wolf stops, becoming as spellbound by Sugar’s song as the pups have.
The October air is warm and the crickets seem to add to Sugar’s music. The setting is perfect for a tired timber wolf and her pups. The pups yawn and begin to lay down. Their mother snuggles against them, her green eyes getting glossy with sleep.
She yawns loudly, laying her head down on the mossy grass. Sugar quiets her singing ever so slightly as the mother wolf and her two babies close their eyes and begin to slumber. Within a matter of minutes the three timber wolves were in a deep slumber. Sugar lowered her voice to barely a whisper before finally stopping her singing.
She motioned for Chiffon and Infinity to follow her and the three tiptoe their way out of the forest. Once clear of the slumbering timber wolves Infinity breathes a sigh of relief.
“Great thinking sis,” he says, bumping into Sugar slightly.
“I’m with Finny on this one. If you hadn’t started singing we’d all be wolf meat by now.” Chiffon smiled.
Sugar smiled at the praises her “siblings” bestowed upon her. The pain from her broken wing was bothering her but she kept on a brave face for her brothers.
“Well why don’t we make our way back to town. We’ll have one heck of a story to tell for this year’s Nightmare Night celebration.” Sugar winks.
The three ponies head back toward Ponyville, the distant sound of snoring echoing from the forest behind them.
The three ponies smiled as they trotted home where the sound of laughter and cheers could be heard.
This was one Nightmare Night they wouldn’t soon forget.
