Description Maybe I should put this on Scribd too.

I owe a lot of this to Brian Miller and his book "Master Digital Color". This is just my process of achieving a "soft" cel shaded look that is so common on Disney Princess merchandise.

The reason the picture never looks "complete" in the tutorial is because I only demonstrated one part of it and I kept deleting the changes I made when I closed the file and came back to it a day later. It was a lazy tutorial, but I still made it as clear and helpful as possible.

When I get a clear block of time I will finish this picture and upload it.

I've been trying to capture an old school airbrushing look, this might help a little bit!

I learned a lot from the princess project. Its hard to master though. Something I had to practice was using feather then deleting a edge that was suppose to be hard. You have to make a selection larger on the edge you want hard so you can delete it later. Cast shadows are often suppose to have hard edges. I also do that to make sure the feathering doesn't go past the lineart. Also involves a lot of saving selections.

Looks good

I'll look at the video later. I have dialup at home.

You should post it on HueDoo and Gutterzombie when you get done. They give a lot of good advice sometimes.

I'm doing the scarab project now. The text doesn't describe the style very well but when I look at the finish cmyk version a lot of the shiny metal bits are a mix between gradant cuts and hand brushing. Its even more complex.

Thanks.

I found the princess part kind of hard too at first, then I came back to it and worked on it with gentle strokes. Using a digital tablet really helps. Until now I never knew how to make one edge of a selection hard while the rest was soft (it was never explained in the book).

Is HueDoo working now? When I got my copy of Master Digital Color the website was down and I thought it had died.

I did the princess project in painter 11 so I just lowered the opacity. I also experemented with using really large soft brushes and moving the brush to the side as I moved through the cut. So the more transparent soft edge was the only thing being painted with.

I'm still not that good with pressure. I'm practicing with using it for line width in Manga studio but I have trouble getting enough feedback for using it for opacity. I can't make a long smooth gradient with it anyway.

HueDoo's hosting forum goes down towards the end of every month as it runs out of bandwidth.
