Description UPDATE: Just for a point of reference, here is the artwork from the magazine tutorial that I was trying to simulate in my own style: [link]

I kind of decided that all new art I made was going to be stuff I'd want to put in my portfolio....as in portfolio quality.

Mostly done in Adobe Illustrator and touched up in Photoshop. It was the result of an exercise from Digital Artist magazine (which is the best magazine I've read so far), where this guy taught you how to make random seamless Illustrator patterns.

The pattern was originally going to be all sorts of Mariokart items, but problems happened and I had to figure out how to trace over sketches in Illustrator with the pen tool all over again (I know how to use the pen tool, but it was just figuring out how to fill shapes with multiple colours, then I realized I need to make different paths for different colours).

The blooper was originally meant to be white, but it ended up blue because I wanted the sparkle to be visible.

More exercises to come when I do them.

Of particular interest to me in this piece is the squid's head and the background. I like the pattern in the background, it's great; however, also having it repeated in the shirt without shadows (if there is a shadow, I cannot detect it), makes your otherwise somewhat well-shaped squid look a bit flat. The shades simple shading and highlights of the squid's head are most effective, and although not necessary, I don't think it would hurt to add maybe a few white shiny spots to a tenticle or two of his. Though I do not judge your artwork from any lack of them; that is merely a suggestion that came to mind when viewing this piece.

The lineart is clear and I like that you've used a dark blue in place of black. It work better with your colour scheme. The white edge also looks good, though it might look less distracting if it were a bit thicker - being the same thickness as your lineart, it seems to be competing with it for attention.

One other thing, about this chap's leg-tenticles (or chap-ess?) the sharp angular blocks of the shades clashes with the smooth, organic looking shapes formed by the colours on his head - perhaps try and give then a rounded edge at the tip, rather than converging to a point.

It's an adorable piece though, I really do like this squid; it has quite a bit of character about it.

Thank you for your critique. It has been most helpful. I do agree I might not have made the white outline thick enough, and all the tentacles don't seem to be the same shape or volume.

To be honest I might do lineart in Photoshop from now on, as it allows me to do more flowing and controlled lines with greater variation in thickness. This was just an exercise to see if I could improve with Illustrator.

Just for reference, this was the kind of thing I was trying to end up with (the artwork from the tutorial): [link]

You're welcome; I'm just glad you got something out of it. I haven't used illustrator, so I am unable to contribute advice for it, but that's great that you are trying out other programs - you will have a broader range of options available for your art I imagine.

And thank you for the link, I see now what you were aiming for; and it also explains the shiny spot - I think I understand now why you chose not to make any of his tentacles shiny too C:

It looks faaaantastic! 8D Very professional and sleek. I love how you draw Bloopers~
(...and nice pun in the title, hurrhurrr. d: )

My only suggestion is to add a smidgen of shading to the shirt. It looks great, don't get me wrong, but it's just kinda necessary to add more depth there which the rest of the blooper has.

(Still, I love this! Wonderful job~ )

Thanks. I know the shirt makes it look flat. It was just a pattern fill.

This is really cute and the pattern texture is amazing. I think you got that down really well. I also like the monochromatic color scheme the blue and white just work beautifully off of each other. Hope to see what other exercises you do

Thank you. At first I didn't have the monochromatic colors in mind, but it just seemed to work out that way. I need to brush up on color theory.

I like the style and the rendering.

I know another person who does the white aura outside black lineart. I don't really like it myself.

I think it would look better with a little more contrast of color between the background and figure. Or just something besides so many squids. Shirt is a little flat.

Yeah the shirt was kind of intentional though. I kind of wanted to get something like the tutorial artwork: [link]
