She made not a sound as she staggered backwards, her lips quivering, as if in desperate protest against that cruel length of iron, plunged into her chest. Her hand picked feebly at the grotesque protrusion, her eyes wide in terrified bewilderment.

As she toppled, she still could hardly fathom that she had been betrayed. That realization came a moment later, her cape flapping around her, like some mockery of a bird in flight.
