Shadow Grabber

The family had a run of bad luck lately. They were forced to move into a cozy little trailer park. The mobile home was slightly cramped, but everyone was together.
It started small. Noises, things moved from their last position.
One night the girl was up late, watching TV in the living room and doing some art sketches. The windows were open and a light breeze wafted through the room.
A shard of a broken mirror was suddenly on the floor in front of her. She looked at it with surprise.  There were screens on the windows yet out of the corner of her eye she was sure she saw a large hand place the shard on the floor. She felt uncomfortable and decided to go to bed, after throwing the shard in the trash can.
Several nights passed before it happened again. She called out to her parents who sleepily told her that she must be imagining things and to just go to sleep already. She complied and went to her room. There was a dark shadow in the corner that she'd never noticed before, but dismissed it because she was too tired.
More than two weeks passed without anything odd taking place. She felt safe about watching the TV late at night again.
Until a mirror shard showed up on the floor in front of her.
Then another
….and another.
Soon there were ten shards lined up on the floor. She was panicking silently: her heart was pounding in her chest, and her breathing was rapid and choppy.
“Stop it.” She croaked out. A sinister giggle could be heard, and she raced to her bed; pulling her blanket tightly over her head.
Within days she noticed a strange feeling in the corner behind the recliner. It was as if there was a dark void in that location. It was dark and heavy and she avoided it the best she could.
The thing appeared to have invited it's self into the house through the mirror shard offerings.
Day after day the darkness deepened. No one else in the home seemed to take any notice of it.
She began to lose sleep, and her appetite dropped away. She looked tired and haggard, no longer her self.
She tried hard to maintain her friendships even though she felt alone and isolated. One sunny day the phone rang and she answered. It was her best friend. They began a long conversation.
Without thinking she sat down on the arm of the recliner. Suddenly the darkness grabbed her. She let out a surprised squeak. A dark hand covered her mouth and she tried to scream. All she could manage was muffled noises.
Her friend on the other side of the conversation asked what was wrong. She tried over and over to yell “HELP ME!” but the hand covered her mouth too securely.
One last muffled “Help me” could be heard before she was pulled into the dark void and the phone went dead.
Then I woke up with a muffled “HELP ME” coming from my own mouth. My child came into my room to see if I was alright. I said I was fine but wide awake. I went to the living room to have a smoke and a drink.
An hour later I was able to go back to sleep but that dream still clung to the back of my mind.
