Evening came down and embraced the small town which soon drowned in deep sleep. The vacation days were about to begin so people rushed to work to get everything done before their leave. There was a lot of work to be done in the little gardens, in this time of year covered with the luscious kam* plant. This was one of the most popular home grown crop due to the versatile use of it’s fruit. Even Anette had some saplings since they were so cheap. Her savings were quickly vanishing so it was convenient to have some inexpensive food at hand.
Anette was watching a scary movie and munching dried slices of kam. The children were sound asleep in their room in the attic so she could finally afford to watch something violent. The movie didn’t seem that scary to her though, it was actually rather silly.
Soon after the clock struck 11pm, Anette heard a car parking on her drive way. She instantly knew what was going on so she didn’t spend a single moment to hesitate. She quickly went for her kids and rushed them out of the bed right in their pyjamas. They groaned silently but went with her orders nonetheless. Fear was starting to grow in them. Anette took a peak through the window and noticed that there were three police vans parked in front of the house.
“Damn it!” she cursed and took both children in her arms. She somehow tied them on to herself like she was taught in her fighting unit. Someone started knocking on the door. In the same second Anette rushed to the back door and ran out. She managed to get over the neighbour’s fence.
Crack! The policemen broke in. Now they’re going to notice she’s not there. Damn it, damn it, damn it!
She ran across the neighbour’s garden and doing so woke up the dog. The chains rattled and the dog fiercely barked and gave her away.
Damn it!
“Look over there!” she heard someone shout from somewhere in her garden. A bunch of lights focused in the direction she was going. Anette picked up the pace and got to a grass field where she ran like crazy. Despite the miserable state she was in, she was still quick and agile. The children were both quiet because they knew what was up. It wasn’t the first time they were prosecuted like this.
In spite of Anette’s struggles, fast approaching steps on the dry grass started bugging her ears.
Damn it! They’re close, too close!
“Hey! Stop right there!” a rough male voice yelled.
Anette fled on and evaded him. All that long-standing training wasn’t for nothing. She wandered in some high bushes that scratched her and ripped her clothes. The kids quietly endured the pain and fear.
“It’s all gonna be alright, don’t you worry. These are all just soldier games. Your Mom’s still just a big kid and she likes to play games,” she tried to calm them. They still didn’t say a word.
When they finally got out of the bush mess and made it to a forest path, she continued the way deeper into the woods. I rather fight bears than these morons and besides, there aren’t any bears here anyway, she thought and sturdily continued. The cold forest air surrounded them and shivered the little ones. Anette took off her long sleeved shirt and wrapped it around them.
She was familiar with all the hunting stances in the forest and ran to one that barely anyone knew about. She wasn’t sure whether to go on or stop to rest. Little Linette started sobbing so she decided to take a break. She swiftly ran up the ladder, opened the hatch and as soon as she untied the kids, she heard twigs cracking and leaves rustling. Shadows of numerous people appeared in the distance.
They’re here! Anette cursed all these people in her mind and quietly begged Thomas for help.
The children squeezed in her lap and waited in silence. They didn’t even dare to breathe.
“Anette Vongotten Wolf, we’ve had enough of your little games,” a head appeared in the window of the shack.
The kids screamed and Anette quickly stood up in front of them. “No!”
Specialized cops climbed in from all four windows, grabbed Anette and pushed her to the floor. She couldn’t handle them, because there were too many. They quietly tied her up in shoved her down the ladder, then after her they brought the children as well. The higher ranked officer took a glimpse of them.
“Rushing them out in only their pajamas. You’re heartless.“
Anette spat in his face. “I wonder who made us run in the first place!”
“Ma’am, you know what this is about, you heard the decree. The children can’t live alone with an unemployed UU member, who by my personal opinion belongs only in the nuthouse. But let’s not dwell on this.”
“Well I tell you, if it weren’t for our nuthouse units, the war would be far from over,” Anette growled.
“Ma’am, I’m just doing my job. I’m not interested in your personal philosophies.”
Annette was losing the battle. The shocked children were pushed in the police van while she was left all tied up on the floor. She tried to stand up, but the cops had a firm grasp on her. She could only quietly rage and insult everyone around her. When the van with the kids got far enough, they threw her in one as well and drove her home.
“Unfortunately we don’t have the authority to put you in a facility. You’re lucky,” the ranked officer hissed and drove off. Anette stubbornly made it to the kitchen and tilted a bottle of vodka.
