Description Here is my portrait of George Reeves as Clark Kent from "The Adventures of Superman" TV series from the 1950s.
To me George Reeves will always be Superman personafied. You can have your Chris Reeve and all the others that came after, but none hold a candle to George in my opinion.
Colored pencil on Canson colore art paper.

The thing I love most about "The Adventures of Superman" is that the writers and George emphasized on Clark Kent more than Superman which makes so much sense to me!Β

Clark Kent is who he isΒ at heart and he just happens to be an alien who is called Superman.

Very well done portrait that brings back memories. George Reeves was the best Superman and Clark Kent ever. The special effects of Adventures of Superman in the '50s (which re-ran in the '60s) were actually pretty good for the time period. The first attempt in the movie serials of the 1940s at a live-action Superman flying on film failed miserably as Kirk Alyn's flight scenes were so bad they were scrapped and replaced with cartoon animation. But some of the methods used by effects artist Thol Simonson to make George Reeves' Superman fly were pretty original and inventive, including the flying pan on a swivel that made Reeves "fly" as he laid on it (Reeves was once dropped and eschewed wires), the divng boards, the moving background process screens and even Β the things like collapsible guns, steel bars, fake bombs, rocks, table saws and even fake walls that George was always bursting through, all pretty exciting and awesome to a kid of the era watching in black and white on the very small TV screens of the day.Β

You're preaching to the choir brother!
sadly today's youth is so used to near photo realistic CG effects and video game imagery they simply can't see past a few bad 50s TV matte ficschers.
And it's the same for many other genre shows of the period.
thanks for the kind words.

One of the things that I've wanted to get to for many, many years is a hard boiled detective strip with George as the main character, with Noelle Neil and Phylis Coates as his associates.Β  I've had story ideas, and such but haven't gotten around to getting anything finished.Β  But yeah I always loved George's Superman, even though you could tell he was getting a little tired of it toward the end.

An interesting idea.
Such a bitter sweet tale for Mr. Reeves. And WHAT really happened? Suicide or murder? We will never know. This really is a job for Superman.

Have you ever seen the movie Hollywoodland.Β  It's all about one detective's search for just that solution.Β  As a movie it's alright, but I do kinda like the way it delves into the case, and shows some of the stuff that was going on in Hollywood at the time.Β  It's worth a watch in any event.

Not a great film but not bad.

Amen, brother. This is the actor whose face and performance inspired Alex Ross' vision of Superman. This was MY Superman, when I was a mere child. His appearance on I Love Lucy wasΒ a thrill to me; I daresay no other Superman actor since has had such an effect on a generation of young people.
I wish he had been more proud of playing the character. I wish I could've told him how much his performance meant to me and multitudes of other kiddos of that time. I wish he'd really been bulletproof.
Thanks, MJBivouac.

Thanks very much. To me George Reeves will always be Superman. Questionable 50s era TV special effects and all. He's still MY Man Of Steel. And perhaps more importantly, Reeves was hands down the BEST Clark Kent EVER! Some people might not think this part of the character is all that important, but when you see Christopher Reeve's Kent, which I think is pretty darned awful, you realize just how important being a good Clark really is.
Way back in the 80s I wanted to like Christopher Reeve as Superman. I have seen all the movies, but over the years I have grown to dislike those films more and more. I have nothing against Reeve himself. Frankly I liked him MORE in Somewhere in Time. He was never a great actor, a really bad Clark Kent, but not a bad guy.

Excellent portrait of George Reeves. Your style and technique far outshine mine. I never was able to get the knack for real life portraits, so I settled on cartooning (woman in particular). And I agree with you as far as Mr. Reeves is concerned: There is only one TV Superman, and George was it. It was so sad that that role which gave him fame also made it impossible for him to get any other acting jobs because of typecasting which led to his tragic death by suicide.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MJBivouac In reply to kiff57krocker [2012-10-05 02:04:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes, he got a bum deal. He had a role in "From Here to Eternity", that sadly got CUT OUT because when the film was shown to test audiences, George was SO well known as Superman, that the audience started "Dum-Dum-Dumming" the "The Adventures of Superman" theme, and then the producers decide to remove his character and performance from the film for fear that people would not take the film seriously.

Your history about Reeve's role in "From Here to Eternity" is correct, although he can still be seen in DVD copies of that film as the mess sergeant. My favorite scene of his is when he tells Pvt. Maggio, played by Frank Sinatra, who is on K.P. to "slow down so's you stop sweating in the food!" To which Maggio replies, "Don't hold me back, Sarge, I'm puttin' in for Corporal tomorrow." Of course that was when Hollywood actually knew how to make movies.

By all means, do. It'll be money well spent. And I think you and I will agree that the most repugnant character in that film was the stockade sergeant, "Fatso" Judson, played by the late Ernest Borgnine. Enjoy.
