To keep people informed about the progress I am making on drawings, I have decided that henceforth I will post the original sketches of drawings as entries in themselves, and then I will move the sketches to my Scraps once I post a traced and colored version.

That said, about a week ago, I finally purchased a real sketchbook. Now I don't have to use looseleaf paper that I have to keep in a manila folder. I was looking for something to break in this new sketchbook and so I got the idea to draw DeviantART's mascot, Fella. I was attempting to copy the look of Fella as you see him on the logout screen (here's the image directly: [link] ). I can definitely tell a few areas where things don't match up, such as on the raised hand, which doesn't overlap the head as much as it should. But I erased and re-drew that hand more times than any other part.

As for the coloring and shading, I also tried following the colors and patterns in the reference image. Some of the highlighting effects, especially on the fingers, were hard to duplicate. And for those wondering, the background image is a stretched image of a linear-scale spectral print of a sawtooth wave decaying from 1760 to 110 Hz. I came up with that idea after playing around with tone generation and seeing what the spectral prints looked like.

EDIT 8/7/10: I wish I knew when DeviantART's birthday was coming up, else I probably would've put a celebratory statement in this picture somewhere.
