Description I'm taking an introductory art history course at Houston Community College this summer, and the second day of class covered some basic art concepts (e.g. form, color, medium) When the instructor did example illustrations for one- and two-point linear perspective, it gave me the idea for this picture.

It is an experiment in three-point perspective, where each of the points fit inside an equilateral triangle. The base image of the intersecting lines, as well as the colors, was created in Google SketchUp 7. The lighting effects and such were then added with Photoshop CS.

This reminds me of 3 things
1. The colorful triangles remind me of that light that passes through the glass prism and makes a rainbow.
2. The shining light makes me think of a movie company logo, much like Columbia.
3. The colorful blocks make me think Tetris.

You did another fantastic job.

Thanks. Another person said it reminds them of a glass prism too. That was unintended, but I see it now too.

This makes me think of three things:
1. The color spectrum with the triangle(s) of color.
2. A movie logo. The shining light just reminds me of Columbia or Warner Bros. or other shiny logos like that.

This looks amazing how long did it take to create this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mjponso In reply to Cmg241 [2010-12-15 08:15:12 +0000 UTC]

Not as long as you might think. I first created the lines in Google SketchUp (it was actually on a flat plane, not 3D as you might think) and did everything else in Photoshop. The colors were flat colors, fairly straightforward, and the overlay is a combination of a fibers filter and a lens flare. The lens flare was a bugger to add, since I had to get the size and position just right, which took a lot of trial and error.

On a side note, I thank you so much for looking through my gallery and commenting on one of my works. Not many people do that.

Cmg241 In reply to mjponso [2010-12-15 08:22:45 +0000 UTC]

It looks so 3D for being on a flat plane though. The 3 perspective idea is really cool. I still have to get Photoshop down, I am so used to Photoscape and Pixia and Photoshop is so much more complex. The lens flare gives excellent contrast to the black background and the colors really bring the image to have such a 3D look.

And you are welcome, I much appreciate your input on my image as well.

It took me a while to get it down too. Photoshop is really powerful, but hard to learn. But I've been using Photoshop for years and now I'd like to think I know what I'm doing with it.

This is gorgeous. And I love colorful things. Here, the perspective and the prism colors really draw the eye and make it very appealing to look at. In fact, when I pulled up the full view I really did stare at the image for several minutes before scrolling down to comment. I am entranced by colorful things and shinies.

The texturing done (not sure I'm using the right word there, but I hope you know what I mean) makes it seem like the object is sort of translucent and having depth. Like I could reach out and touch it. Or shine light through it and make brilliant rainbows on the wall.

And the use of a lens flare here is great because I feel it adds to the image instead of taking away (which happens a lot with artists who over-use lens flare).

The perspective and lines make me think "technical and science" while the colors and texture make me think of "fantasy and dream-like", which sort of combines when I look at the picture to make me feel sort of like "perhaps fantasy and reality can be the same sometimes". I don't know if that's what you were going for, but we all know different art affects people in different ways. And that is quite moving.

I had another person comment that she liked the picture so much she now uses it as a desktop background. Do you find it that appealing? I don't want to be responsible for lost productivity at work just because you stare at your computer screen for so long.

Coji In reply to mjponso [2010-08-24 23:00:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I would probably use it as a background if it wouldn't be so odd on mine. Two screens mean quite particular wallpapers. But I do think it would make a neat background for my PSP or PS3 or some such!

This is so appealing. Seriously, it's something I could look at for inspiration or just a pinch of colorful happiness ^^

mjponso In reply to Libearty [2010-08-17 22:48:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your comment. I've gotten a greater response to this than I originally anticipated. It was something I had quickly thrown together to give an art history class a lesson in hue, brightness, three-point perspective, etc.

If that is the case, you might like making this picture your desktop background (centered, with plain black backing).

Libearty In reply to mjponso [2010-08-18 03:25:36 +0000 UTC]

For something quickly thrown together it looks pretty dang great ^^

Oh, I never even thought of that! Good idea! I've actually been needing a new background ^^

To be honest, this originally started out as an exercise in three-point perspective, and I was gonna call it that. But I realized it looked a tad plain, so I colored it up and added lighting effects in Photoshop. I think it looks a lot better now.

Yeah, I was aiming for the use of vibrant colors in this picture, along with the three-point perspective and focus on the middle of the shape.

Thanks for the comment.
