Description
When you're doing photography, there are two ways you can make something look like it's a light-source. One way is for it to be a light-source, the other is for it to be lit at the same intensity as the light-source. In this example, we see a light consisting of two high-output bulbs, and another light consisting of a lampshade with a spotlight on it. All I did was make suire the spotlight's beam didn't hit anything but the lampshade, giving the impression that the lampshade is on. I swear there's nothing under there but Wenona's head! Check for wires.Model: Wenona

Yeah, probably a good idea to make sure she's using an energy efficient bulb first.

i think the lamp shade on her head is too intense. it doesnt even look 3d, it looks like a flat image posted on her head.
cool concept though

Maybe the contrast on your monitor is too high - on mine I can just see a tiny bit of detail in the cloth on the lampshade - which is about what you'd get if you photographed a lamp.

I like how you tell us how you do the lighting for each of your works. Always had an interest in photography and artwork but not the passion for learning how to do it. Well and when I was a kid many moons ago my father took an extremely dim view of all the "faggot" arts >_>
Nice touch having the lamp's 'cord' lying visibly unplugged at her feet. But even after reading how you did the lighting i'm awed at how well the lampshade is lit up. It really looks like it is lit on the outer surface but too dense on the inside to cast its glow upon the model below.

If I had photoshopped a highlit area onto her chest, I'm pretty sure I could have fooled everyone. But then it'd be photoshop.

I take it that Wenona was wearing sunglasses or something under the lampshade? Or did that turn out not be necessary?

I small thing you missed. The lamp shade on her head is lit up like there was a light under it but "if" there was a light under there the her lovely chest would be awashed with light.

Yup. I wasn't trying to reproduce an exact illusion - or I'd have just put a light-bulb under the lampshade. The easiest way to make a photo look real is to shoot reality.

You could probably make some money doing what others before you have done; writing photography tutorials. I think a somewhat dry witty style illustrated with shots like this would sell really well. That said, publishing books is a pain in the ass rivalled only by trying to headbutt your way to China.

I think the world is already overpopulated with not-very-good photography books.
Also, most of the time people want to buy a book with specific techniques for a specific look - what would I entitle mine? "The Ranum Method for shooting cheesy girlie photos"?
Maybe when I retire.

Beautiful, but a bit too dark I'd say. It's clear the light is shining on the shade, not from under it. Still lovely of course but I'm curious if it'd be better..

sarcasm eh? sulk all you want but clearly your 'trick' fails. You have props and lighting equipment galore, are you telling me you couldn't figure out a way light her body believably?

I'm not getting the sarcasm or sulking you're alleging. It sounds to me that he's encouraging you to give it a shot for yourself. While it's true that comments often lose something in print, I think you're reading something into it that isn't there.

Great shot, and the model has an amazing body. The lack of light emminating from inside the shade and down onto the body of the "lamp" should be proof enough that this is a neat lil' trick of lighting.
