Description
Well, I've been working out the plot and storyline for Spirit of Evencia, and things have actually been moving along pretty well for me. I'm finally getting it out of my head and onto my computer. I've only been thinking about it for... what, a year or so?So, I knew I'd need to explain how the basic elements work in the very mana-driven story, so here's the rundown:
The world is comprised of four basic elements. Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. But mana itself is more complicated. The known magical disciplines split most of these elements into parts, but there are more (less common) categories of magic out there.
Mana: The basic form of all magic. Though few mages can use mana in this form, some are capable of using this non-elemental magic by conjuring it in pure energy form. It is most often used to throw balls of pure energy at foes or teleport ones own being to another place close by.
Fire: The power to conjure fire without a fuel source has baffled scientists for centuries. Fire created through mana has the unique quality of not burning its master. (or in more skilled hands, his allies cannot be burned as well) Once unleashed, fire will destroy all in its path unless halted by a fire mage.
Earth: The power to manipulate material, objects, and life itself. Earth is split into two disciplines: Materia and Life. Materia magic allows one to move rocks and objects through touch. More experienced mages can manipulate denser, stronger material and create earthquakes at will. Life magic allows the mage to manipulate the material that creates life, healing wounds, ripening fruits or growing plants.
Air: No other mage can grab it, move it, or even see it. Air magic constitutes two disciplines: Wind and Lightning. Wind magic can lift mages into the air, slash at foes with blades of wind, and create mighty gusts. Lightning magic lets the mage charge his being with electricity and unleash it in powerful, paralyzing bolts.
Water: One of the most common yet strange elements on the planet is under their control. Water mages follow the Ice and Aqua disciplines. Aqua is a versatile magic, usable for moving various amounts of water through the air at high speeds, dispersing or condensing water in the air, and even healing the body. Ice magic is powerful, allowing the mage to form and manipulate sharp crystals of ice or freeze foes in place.
Holy and Darkness: These disciplines are both closely related and far disconnected from each other. Holy magic is thought to be responsible for the kindness of all people. It is said that only a pact with the holy elemental daemon itself can grant one the ability to use this magic. With this extremely rare magic, mages can conjure powerful, penetrating beams of light. Darkness magic controls and balances light in the world, keeping order whilst creating chaos. Darkness mages, though they are rare, can slip into the shadows and become invisible, and the magic allows them to see where there is no light. Strong darkness magic can be conjured to rip through soil and flesh alike.
Psych: Not much is known about this extremely rare form of magic. Psych magic is the power of the mind. Anyone capable of manipulating Psych magic can alter the thoughts and minds of other beings.

wind and lightning) Water

Uh, wouldn't Water/Aqua and Air/Wind basically be the same thing?

This is explained in the description. Three of the elements are subdivided. Water is subdivided to aqua and ice. Air is subdivided to wind and lightening. So that explain things. I can get the subdivisions sort of just by looking at the picture carefully. Similarly earth is subdivided to materia and life.

Actually, sorry the description is so TL;DR, but there's a bit at the end there about how these are actually someone else's rune brushes. I have a new(er) set I made a couple years ago which are my on original designs here: [link]

You could use any you like. The rune brush set is free for public use, and my rune designs aren't riding on a copyright or anything, so I don't see why not. Just be sure to send some pictures.

No, everything that is magic requires stuff called materia to use, so without materia, you're screwed, which makes it ANNOYING to play FFVII.......

xD
It's like in FFVIII where you don't have MP, just limited number of uses of each magic on party members and you use turns to "steal" monster and boss magic. *woot, wasted another attack turn to get 8 more uses of Cure*
