Both this and the AP-97 are obviously inspired by the AK-47. A Russian/Soviet parody nation is not complete without it.

Hehe.
Actually this one is based off the AN-94, while the AP-97 is a kind of AK-12/AEK-971 hybrid

AN-94?
What do the cylinders next to the sides of the barrel do?

Ah, fair enough. Although the Nikonov is probably based on the Ak-47 so really it just comes back to that.

In part
Got some roots in the AK-74, AL-7 and AEK, with a dash of its own crazy 'How the hell does it do that?'
Very weird gun, down to the magazine being canted off to the right to help with feeding.
I didn't implement that particular feature, since my gun doesnt have a super ROF. Biggest take was the recoil reduction system and the look of the gas system. Rest of it is sort of a Frankengun of the AK-74M, AR-18 and AK-12

Nice history behind this weapon. Can't wait for your novel!
Btw, the angled foregrip addition is a nice touch.
