Description THIS FILE IS REALLY REALLY LARGE

SOMEBODY LOOK ME STRAIGHT IN THE EYES AND TELL ME TO STOP MAKING MY TUTORIALS SO LONG?? ahhh
Hahaha I was in the mood to make a tutorial today, and decided what better than to update my old mane and tail tutorial? My style has changed so much since I made that. I also decided to use my two latest pieces instead of one, so you can get an even BIGGER inside-scoop on them.
All in the spirit of my second year on this account!!! (I've actually been on dA much longer shh)

If I rambled on too long, tell me. And if I say something that makes 0 sense, tell me too! I hope at least someone can benefit from this somehow!! If you have any questions, please ask me and I'll answer them pronto. n v n

Enjoy!

Do you make your opacity lower when doing the base/adding highlights/shadows?

mockingale In reply to Tocama [2016-01-13 02:42:43 +0000 UTC]

95% of the time when painting hair i keep the opacity at full (: i only ever lower if i feel like, in a particular case, the colour is being too harsh. Usually though, if i find that, i just change up the colour so that there's a smaller gap between the shades/values! hopefully that helped!

How do you make your manes looks soft? Mine look really stringy. (If that makes any sense)

mockingale In reply to OakCreekHorseDesigns [2014-07-03 17:23:23 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the delayed reply!! I'm not sure if there is an effective way for me to explain at a technique perspective, because my whole process is broken down in the tutorial. When I first started painting hair, I was also unsatisfied with the texture! Honestly, I started to understand how hair flowed, moved and looked the more and more I painted it. Try and think in layers, hair doesn't always flow in one block -- there are so many strands and layers that move in different ways.

You might also be using too small of a brush. n v n Try starting off larger, then getting smaller and smaller as you build up shadows and highlights.

I'm looking at your hair right now and it actually doesn't look as stringy as you say!! ie in fav.me/d5wqovk "wonderful world" it looks quite soft, especially with the lighting! with practice I promise you'll get more and more comfortable with painting hair. Sorry I couldn't be any more help, hopefully this somewhat answered your question!

So you already have the subject painted and have the lighting on the horse before you start painting hair?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mockingale In reply to THE-JADED-CREATOR [2014-03-15 13:26:20 +0000 UTC]

Yep -- it all comes down to personal preference, but I like getting everything done on the horse and ending it off with painting the hair. It's just how I like working, I suppose. ^^

I think this is a great example for black manes, beautiful. BUT - lighter colors will have a greater variation of value and (especially with white hair) of color. Maybe it's just my opinion, but I don't think it's necessarily bad to have a larger variation in value. It just depends on how well you blend it, and where those contrast-y areas are. If every single strand has lots of contrast, that's obviously bad, but you need some contrast to show more extreme lighting, or lighting on hair that reflects more (ie lighter colors).

Very nice walkthrough and explanation though!

mockingale In reply to Deltapotamus [2014-03-15 13:25:41 +0000 UTC]

I completely understand what you're saying and agree with you wholeheartedly!! Maybe it can be chalked up to the fact that I haven't done lighter coloured hair in what feels like forever, so I have a bit more experience with darker manes. When I was talking about the "no white highlights" thing, I was hoping to get people to think more of lighting and environment when painting their hair. Not saying that white highlights are not allowed, but rather instead of opting straight to whites and grays as highlights (something I always did), look more to the background to get some of their values. But yes, I agree 100% with what you said, and also thank you for pointing that out to me!! I still have things to learn. ^^

Thank you! ♥

Deltapotamus In reply to mockingale [2014-03-15 15:44:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you're totally right about using colors from the background rather than just colors of white/gray/black.  That's a great point to add. I was just pointing out bits of how much contrast you add. :]
