Description The self-proclaimed smartest man in Gotham. As a child, Edward Nygma was a clever boy who became obsessed with puzzles and games at a very young age. Unfortunately, when Edward received high scores on some important tests in school, his father, unable to grasp the fact that his son was highly intelligent, thus believing he had cheated, beat him out of envy. In his early adult years, his love of puzzles landed him a job as a computer software designer and created the game "The Riddle of the Minotaur", a game that quickly became a smash hit.

As sales soared, ha and several people became very wealthy, including the company's corporate chair, Fred Mockridge. However, Mockridge fired Nygma shortly after despite the fact that he created the game, aiming to take most of the credit for himself. Outraged, Nygma began plotting his revenge by proving how intelligently superior he was to Mockridge. After 3 years of planning, Nygma booby-trapped Mockridge's house with deadly puzzles and traps, turning his house into a death trap similar to how he originally designed "The Riddle of the Minotaur". While trying to survive his house of horrors, Mockridge attempted to call the police, a call that was intercepted by Batman, who went to the house and saved Mockridge from Nygma's puzzles, allowing Nygma to make his escape before being captured. Intrigued by the level of intelligence Batman showed compared to his original target, Nygma decided then and there that he was an adversary worthy of his intellect. Soon after, he donned a new identity, the Riddler, and began committing numerous crimes all over the city, leaving puzzles and clues for Batman follow to see and wanted to see who truly had the superior mind.

Fun fact: in the comics, Nygma eventually realized there were less illegal ways to match wits with the Batman, leading to the events I had Bruce and Gordon discuss in what is now my most-favorited work:  Riddle Me ThisIt was a quiet night, by Gotham standards, which suited GCPD commissioner Jim Gordon just fine. Actual quietness just meant that the crooks weren't being noticed, which would be much worse for everyone else. There was just one small issue, but he wanted the World's Greatest Detective on it before it became a big one.
"Gordon, I know you wouldn't waste my time."
"Indeed I wouldn't. The application looked solid at first, but then I saw the name on it, and now I need a second opinion."
Batman, being the latest in a long line of rich white men, had made a point of overlooking that sort of detail, to ensure that he was getting the best for the job instead of other rich white men. There was an overlap, of course, but not enough of one to justify his peers' hiring practices. "Edward Nygma."
"The Riddler. What's his angle, I wonder?"
"Same as it always is, most likely. Prove that he's smarter than everyone else. Mostly me, because he's already done so with everyone else."
"When you put it that
