Description Drew dropped his keys lazily onto the kitchen counter. He was alone in his two-bedroom apartment. Andrew had decided to fit in a few more hours before heading home. He claimed he’d be back soon, that it wasn’t going to take long for him to finish up some project. But Drew knew him all too well. For Andrew, “soon” turned into 8 or 9 hours of vocation. Right now Drew was relieved. He needed some time to think. Clear the air. Let everything sink in.
What was he going to do about Avi? Well, obviously he had incited her to stay t his place, and Andrew hadn’t seemed to mind at the time, but that was all on pure impulse. How were they going to handle watching a kid? Sure, she was a great friend and all…
She needs your help, said a small voice, you heard her as well as I did. She’s got no one else to go to. You’re the only family she truly trusts.
Drew ran his fingers through his hair. Obviously this wasn’t going to be something easy to smooth out. He decided to wait until Andrew got home to discuss this. It was just wounding him up ever more. Time to forget about it and relax. It’s about time he just sad on his fat ass and did nothing.

Around 8 pm Drew closed his eyes and dozed off. He had removed his shoes and jacket, but other than that he was still fully clothed. Not that he cared. All he wanted at the moment was to sleep. The movie- some action thriller - was still on.
Even in his dreams he could not escape the harsh readily. All he saw were images of Avi crying and her father, an honorable man once known by Drew, cruelly laughing and ripping about her clothes. Andrew stood alongside Drew, staring at him.
“Help her.” he said, “Can’t you see the tears?”
Then a soft pair of lips kissed his cheek and he awoke with a jerk, now face to face with Andrew.
“Hey, you alright?” Andrew said, sitting next to him.
Drew sat up, looked around and, seeing that no one else was there, sat back into the couch. He wasn’t quite sure where to start. All of it was swirling into its own unique mess.
“Would you mine having Avi stay here?” Drew blurted, “With us?”
Andrews’s eyebrows rose with surprise. He wasn’t anticipating this question. For a moment he sat and thought about it.
“I think the real question is: ‘Should we feel responsive for Avi?’” He sat a moment, then got up and walked to the window that looked down into the streets below. Rain bean to tap at the window, slightly smearing the outside world.
“We’re the only hope she has left.” Drew said, recalling what the small voice- his conscience? - had said, “The only people she can and will trust.”
Andrew was silence, still watching the world below. He unbuttoned his jacket and removed it. Suddenly he felt extremely exhausted.
“Lets talk to Avi about this. You know as well as I do how she gets when people keep things from her. In a day or two, when she’s healed more, we’ll make another visit. Then we’ll make the decision.” Andrew sighed. “As for me, I think its time for bed.” He walked over to his husband and kissed him. “Good night.”
Drew smiled and hugged Andrew. “I love you,” he said, kissing him.
Andrew smiled and told Drew he loved him also. He yawned and announced he was going to bed. With a final hug Drew let him go and watched him as he walked to the bedroom and softly shut the door.
Slowly Drew walked back to the couch and sat. His body began to relax. After speaking with Andrew he felt much better about everything. Somehow his spouse was able to calm his nerves, even if the talk was for a minute or two. He considered himself the luckiest man in the world.

For an hour, maybe two, Drew sat. He stared out the window and just let his brain empty of all thought. The rain had gotten worse, now running down the glass rapidly, making it impossible to see out. The apartment was silent except for the steady breathing of Andrew in the next room.
When Drew’s eyes began to shut again, he rose from the couch and shuffled into the bedroom. He watched Andrew’s chest slowly rise and fall with each breath he took and smiled. My baby, he thought to himself. Quickly he undressed and, being very careful not to disturb his partner, got into bed. Almost instantly he was asleep.
