I can tell you were hungry, there are subtle overtones of it lurking somewhere in this piece, though it's quite nebulous. The simplicity of the language in the opening lines, indicative doubtless of the way in which hunger effects the brain, followed by the vernacular style of the second line - a startling commentary on the use of language in itself - encourages a smooth rhythm, only slightly disjointed in the last line-pair.

There's no sign here as to whether chicken was eventually procured, though I'd probably suggest that it was, otherwise I don't think you would revere that noble food so much in this poem.
