Description I wrote this tutorial ages ago when I noticed the amount of questions I was being asked on digital IR was increasing so i decided to write a tutorial that I could point people towards.

Something like the hoya R72 should work. Does the camera not have a bulb mode where you can hold the shutter open indefinitely with a remote, you have to time the shots yourself but it lets you get long exposures.

okay, yeah I hear a lot of people who have a hoya r72. Oh right bulb mode is a good idea of course^^ Thanks!

I probably should mention that in the tutorial that anything over 30sec needs bulb mode and manually timed!

yeah^^
hmm I'm now looking at e-bay for IR filters, some say 'for HOYA bk61' do you have any idea what that means? and the filter is only 12 euro's ($16,80)

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-13 23:47:54 +0000 UTC]

I had a look about and cant actually see anything wrong with them. I've no idea what the Bk61 bit is about though. For the price it's probably worth giving it a go!

indeed, but I'm still not sure my camera is compatible with it (it's a canon 1000d). Cause I found things on the internet about an IR cut filter on some camera's and that should be removed before making IR photos... what do you know about that?
I don't want to open up my camera and ruin it :S

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-14 12:41:33 +0000 UTC]

All dSLR's have a filter inside that cuts out IR light to varying degree's. Thats what gives you the really long exposure times when you use an IR filter as basically your cutting out both kinds of light so very very little light is actually getting through so you need a long exposure. It's possible to modify the camera by removing the IR cut filter and adding one that cuts visible light then you camera operates like normal but takes IR photos.

It will work with just an IR filter and a long exposure though

ohh okay I understand thanks!
in that case, I'll just work with long exposures^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-14 14:49:35 +0000 UTC]

My filter got me very very long exposures. An R72 equivilant will get you much shorter (but still up to a minute or two ) exposures.

To do the long exposures you'll need a remote shutter cable that you can lock open.

manga-eefke In reply to mole2k [2009-06-14 17:02:57 +0000 UTC]

yeah cause yours is totally black.
hmm and that is with iso 100? well, I'll just try some different things and see how it works out^^
Oh I can't wait untill the filter arrives xD I ordered the Hayo R72 anyway

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-14 21:39:26 +0000 UTC]

I might order myself an R72 sometime, I dropped my filter so havnt been able to take any in over a year!

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-15 13:06:05 +0000 UTC]

I'll get another one at some point, I would probably go for an R72 instead to leave things a little less boring

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manga-eefke In reply to mole2k [2009-06-15 15:47:06 +0000 UTC]

okay^^ haha why less boring? your photos are very good I think

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-15 17:22:04 +0000 UTC]

Taking them is very boring as my exposure times where 10-15min+ so I had to line everything up then wait about.

manga-eefke In reply to mole2k [2009-06-16 11:08:37 +0000 UTC]

ohh that way haha yeah, and hope that people don't walk trough your scene >.<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-16 12:30:52 +0000 UTC]

With that long an exposure it didnt actually matter. I took one of a lake and two boats went past and you cant see either of them!

As long as they keep moving they dont leave a big enough trace on the actual photograph to be noticable. If they stood around chatting for 5-10min you would notice them as a blur (as they would be moving a bit)

manga-eefke In reply to mole2k [2009-06-17 10:26:34 +0000 UTC]

oh right that's true^^
could be a cool effect though, some ghost-like people in your photo.

I got my filter yesterday, so cool! haha
look my fist try: [link]

I remember seeing a photo in national geographic of a marketplace filled with people and they took a long exposure and the people shopping where blurred but the people at the stalls wernt. It looked awesome.

yeah, I can imaging that
like those photo's from highways made in the dark, where you only see the stripes of the carlights, that's so cool, I also want to make a photo like that some day^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-17 21:55:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah i've seen some awesome shots like that before, i've never tried it as I live out in the middle of nowhere so there isnt any big highways here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manga-eefke In reply to mole2k [2009-06-18 10:26:21 +0000 UTC]

here neither, well I don't live in the middle of nowhere, but for some reason the closest highways are always very quite when it's dark...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to manga-eefke [2009-06-18 12:10:36 +0000 UTC]

For some reason they stopped all the highways about 60 miles from here on both sides

I need help! I've just bought a Cokin P007 IR filter to use, but I can't get it to work properly.

I've taken a picture with the right exposure, as everything is bright red. But when I take the picture there are bright rings around the photo and large bokeh.

Why is this happening? Here's an example shot: [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to JackMcIntyre [2007-12-18 16:01:02 +0000 UTC]

The red effect is due to the white balance being wrong. Its quite common that the shots come out red, if you shoot in raw it allows you to change the white balance afterwards giving you a little bit more room to get the colours balanced.

Im not quite sure what the blue flare is being caused by, its possibly a light leak. Is the filter a screw in one or is it a square one in a holder. It might be work trying to see if there is any light leaks as even the smallest leak will have detremental effects on the photo. It might also be caused by light leaking in through the viewfinder, it might be worth blocking it up during the long exposures to help erradicate light leaking.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JackMcIntyre In reply to mole2k [2007-12-18 16:08:19 +0000 UTC]

Viewfinder leak seams right, as it looks like a reflection of the lens on some photo's. I'll give it a try by covering up the VF and see what happens.

Its a square slide-in filter by the way, Cokin P007.

Thanks for the help!

mole2k In reply to JackMcIntyre [2007-12-18 16:28:39 +0000 UTC]

If the viewfinder isnt the issue you could try going around the filter with some bluetac to help seal it.

fantastic info. Would also be great to give if you know some info on best way to modify or which filter does best job in IR modified cameras nowadays.

I added you a link in my journal

Sadly I dont have any experience with IR modded camera's, I do hope to mod my 20d when I can afford a new camera.

I've been intending on writing a processing tutorial for digital IR photos as I find it is quite different to conventional photographs.

Wow, great stuff! Didn't know IR images were even possible with conventional cameras. Nice work, love how the vegetation comes out snowy white!

They are possible it just takes a bit of time and technique to get it working.

nice man!

how much $ is an infra-red filter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mole2k In reply to 6th-gear [2007-11-08 16:40:34 +0000 UTC]

They range from quite cheap to silly expensive.

The one I have cost me about $60 from hong kong but a 77mm Hoya R72 which is one I want to get costs quite a lot, in the $140+ region which is why I went for the cheaper filter to start with as I wasnt sure if I would like doing IR stuff.
