Description This i believe is my best drawing to date. I just finished it today, and i'm extremely proud of it. It's of one of my favorite Dinosaurs the Utah Raptor. I love Dinosaurs and have been wanting to draw one for a while, so i did. Total time to draw and color this in was about 5 hours over a two day period. To do this I only used a #2 Pencil and a Gray and Black colored pencil, so i feel that i made a great drawing with minimal materials. Any advice/feedback/critiques on this would be most appreciated I hope you guys like it

also, thanx to RocktheTaco for pointing out my mistake on the original

Ok, where to start...
First stop by The Dinosauricon and to get your refs revved up. Specially in what pertains to skeletal diagrams.

This just looks like you've seen a lot of Jurassic Park in terms of anatomy. The tail shouldn't be that thick and the hands should fold like a bird's and the head is well, unrecognizable as a dromaeosaur's. I can't see the back of the skull, which is too thick and short, and the antorbital fenestra is too expanded. Also lacking are feathers, though since Utahraptor is 5 meters long it's possible there were naked areas. The chest area isn't there which is problematic since these animals used their arms to grasp and climb onto prey and whatever big objects in the landscape. Contrary to ~RockoTheTaco you can't differentiate fossil animals on the basis their reconstructions having the eyes farther up or farther down. That is just artistic license taken by whoever has done the illustration or model. So the best way you could rename this would be "JP Raptor" or somesuch.

The shading while being good at conveing the shape of the animal is inconsistent at best. One just can't figure out where the light is coming from nor if there are multiple light sources. Select a direction the light is coming from and work from there.

And I'm all worn out critique-wise. Hope to have cleared some doubts

It seems to me like it's surposed to be a JP raptor.

Actuly the tail is fine, yes the arms are wrong, but, thats how they have been thought of since 1993.

You are perfectly right about most ealse untill the end of paragraph two.

I draw in the style of shading and this, from the looks of it, is shading with out the shadows. You may also be forgeting that coloring can change the shade, this is a good atempt as a shading work.

Overall it is a briliant picture, putting aside the JP raptor style. Lets just say this is a JP fac art. Now what do you think?

It gets a 8/10 from me.

Well, while I do agree with you, I dislike the slapping of labels that goes on when drawing dinosaurs without accurate reference so I take the label seriously

Now that I look at it, it seems more like the lighting of an overcast day, though I don't see hints of grayscale colouring. Thing is I'm generally more fond of starker shading.

I'm not that much of a fan of Jurassic Park myself so it gets a 7/10 for execution alone tough some of the larger scales (feet, hands) could also be shown.

One could say I'm one of the armchair kind Yes, I liked it enough to think it merited a critique, otherwise I would have just cringed and got back to my netsurfing Also, being an amateur doesn't mean one shouldn't have high standards: I'm basicaly an amateur myself

This is indeed such a great drawing. Attention to detail is inspiring. The depth of creature is very visible too!

You know, that actually looks more like a Utahraptor, now that I look at it. Deinonychus's eyes were higher up, and it wasn't as cool-looking as the dinosaur in your picture.

yea they are a amamber of the raptor family, but jurassic par kmisrepresented velociraptors, so a lotta people get the wrong idea about them, and yes, dinosaurs do rock, keeping reptiles is as close as you can get to owning one! lol, thanx for the comment btw, much appreciated
